Cell volume regulation in oocytes and early embryos: connecting physiology to successful culture media
Early preimplantation embryos are particularly sensitive to increased osmolarity, and require the importation of glycine to regulate their cell volumes using a mechanism unique to early embryos. Cell volume regulation first appears when ovulation is triggered, oocyte zona pellucida adhesion is released, and glycine transport is activated.
Is there an optimal pH for culture media used in clinical IVF?
Due to the plasticity of embryos, a range of pHe's can support development, and defining an optimal pHe is difficult. It is unclear whether there is any benefit in changing pHe at various steps during IVF. The ideal pHe will likely vary from media to media and, until comparative studies have been performed isolating pHe, adherence to manufacturer recommendations and maintenance of a small acceptable pHe range are advisable.
Microdrop preparation factors influence culture-media osmolality, which can impair mouse embryo preimplantation development
Common IVF laboratory procedures can unexpectedly alter growth conditions and impact subsequent embryo development. A media characteristic that may be altered is osmolality. The effect of different microdrop preparation conditions on media osmolality was examined. Microdrops of various volumes were prepared under different laboratory conditions. Drops were pipetted directly onto a dish and covered by oil (standard method) or placed in the dish, o
Alteration of gene expression in human cumulus cells as a potential indicator of oocyte aneuploidy
In the current study, SPSB2 and TP53I3 exhibited highly significant differences in their expression between CCs of normal and chromosomally abnormal oocytes. SPSB2 is involved in intracellular signalling and homeostasis, whereas TP53I3 regulates carbohydrate metabolism and apoptosis. We speculate that both these genes might have the potential to serve as non-invasive markers of oocyte aneuploidy.
New pH-buffering system for media utilized during gamete and embryo manipulations for assisted reproduction
Therefore, utilization of bi- and tri-buffered media, containing a mixture of HEPES, MOPS or DIPSO, offers advantages compared with media containing HEPES or MOPS alone, and may be used for procedures such as oocyte retrieval, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, embryo transfer and cryopreservation.
Optimizing the culture environment in the IVF laboratory: impact of pH and buffer capacity on gamete and embryo quality
Cryopreserved–thaw–thawed embryos, as well as denuded oocytes, are especially susceptible to perturbations in pHe. Therefore, proper setting, monitoring and stabilizing of pHe during IVF laboratory procedures is a crucial component of a rigorous quality control programme. Here, importance of both pHi and pHe in respect to gamete and embryo quality are discussed. Furthermore, factors influencing selection of pHe, as well as emerging methods to st
Being born prematurely is linked to an increased risk of a range of mental health problems much later in life, according to researchers. Bipolar disorder, depression and psychosis were all more likely, the study in The Archives of General Psychiatry suggested. The overall risk remained very low, but was higher in premature babies.
Experts cautioned there have since been significant advances in caring for premature babies.
In a groundbreaking study,Yale School of Medicine researchers and colleagues at the University of Oxford have identified the chromosomal make-up of a human egg. This discovery may soon allow them to avoid using abnormal - or aneuploid - eggs during infertility treatments, and instead to pick eggs that are healthy enough for a successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle.
IVF BenchMark by FertAid [This link may be from a sponsor]
IVF BenchMark provides the tools for your IVF clinic to participate in a totally anonymous benchmark program for the production of Key Performance Indicators for your IVF Program. IVFBenchmarking allows you to manage your monthly KPI and also to compare your performance with a variety of other clinics or groups.
The arcuate uterus is a form of a uterine anomaly or variation where the uterine fundus displays a concave contour towards the uterine cavity. Normally the fundus of the uterus is straight or convex on anterior-posterior imaging but in the arcuate uterus it dips into the cavity and may form a small septation. The distinction between an arcuate uterus and a septate uterus is not standardized.

A cervical polyp is a common benign polyp or tumour on the surface of the cervical canal.[1] They can cause irregular menstrual bleeding but often show no symptoms. Treatment consists of simple removal of the polyp and prognosis is generally good. About 1% of cervical polyps will show neoplastic change which may lead to cancer. They are most common in post-menstrual, pre-menopausal women who have been pregnant.
