Chemokine Gene Silencing in Decidual Stromal Cells Limits T Cell Access to the Maternal-Fetal Interface
We show in mice that effector T cells cannot accumulate within the decidua, the specialized stromal tissue encapsulating the fetus and placenta. Impaired accumulation was in part attributable to the epigenetic silencing of key T cell–attracting inflammatory chemokine genes in decidual stromal cells, as evidenced by promoter accrual of repressive histone marks. These findings give insight into mechanisms of fetomaternal immune tolerance, as well
Disclosure patterns of embryo donation mothers compared with adoption and IVF
Embryo donation mothers were far less likely to share information with the child: 43% were inclined towards disclosing, compared with all adoptive mothers and nearly 90% of IVF mothers. Furthermore, embryo donation and IVF mothers who had disclosed had often only given partial explanations of the child’s conception. Differences between embryo donation and adoption in particular should be taken into account when advising embryo recipients.
A discrete population of squamocolumnar junction cells implicated in the pathogenesis of cervical cancer
The findings in this study uncover a potential target for cervical cancer prevention, provide insight into the risk assessment of cervical lesions, and establish a model for elucidating the pathway to cervical cancer following carcinogenic HPV infection.
Delayed paternal age of reproduction in humans is associated with longer telomeres across two generations of descendants
Telomere length (TL) shortens with age in most proliferating tissues, limiting cell division and thereby contributing to senescence. However, TL increases with age in sperm, and, correspondingly, offspring of older fathers inherit longer telomeres.
Predicting and preventing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS): the need for individualized not standardized treatment
Individualized COS (iCOS) could effectively eradicate OHSS, and the identification of hormonal, functional and genetic markers of ovarian response will facilitate iCOS. However, if iCOS is not properly applied, various preventive measures can be instituted once COS has begun, including cancelling the cycle, coasting, individualizing the human chorionic gonadotropin trigger dose or using a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist (for those
Modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for poor semen quality: a case-referent study
STUDY QUESTION Are common lifestyle factors associated with low-motile sperm concentration (MSC)? SUMMARY ANSWER Common lifestyle choices make little contribution to the risk of low MSC.
Long-acting FSH versus daily FSH for women undergoing assisted reproduction
Recombinant DNA technologies have produced a new recombinant molecule which is a long-acting FSH, named corifollitropin alfa (Elonva) or FSH-CTP. A single dose of long-acting FSH is able to keep the circulating FSH level above the threshold necessary to support multi-follicular growth for an entire week. The optimal dose of long-acting FSH is still being determined. A single injection of long-acting FSH can replace seven daily FSH injections duri
New Weekly Fertility Injections Work as Well as Daily, Study Suggests
New long-lasting weekly injections of fertility hormones are as safe and effective as standard daily injections, according to Cochrane researchers. The researchers compared weekly and daily hormone injections in a Cochrane systematic review and found no difference in pregnancies or serious side effects between the two regimens.
Six new human embryonic stem cell lines derived at the University of Michigan have just been placed on the U.S. National Institutes of Health's registry, making the cells available for federally-funded research.
Unhealthy Lifestyles Have Little Impact On Sperm Quality
However, a team of scientists from the Universities of Manchester and Sheffield have found that many common lifestyle choices make little difference to male fertility, based on how many swimming sperm men produce.
If your father and grandfather waited until they were older before reproducing, you might experience life-extending benefits. Biologists assume that a slow pace of aging requires that the body invest more resources in repairing cells and tissues.
An updated survey on the use of progesterone for luteal phase support in stimulated IVF cycles
Two years ago, we initiated the first survey among worldwide IVF units on luteal phase supplementation in stimulated IVF cycles. The results received gave us all some perspective on the way we translate evidence-based medicine into clinical practice. This first survey covered respondents from 84 IVF centers in 35 countries, representing 51,155 cycles per year.
Pregnancy: Why Mother's Immune System Does Not Reject Developing Fetus as Foreign Tissue
Researchers at NYU School of Medicine have made an important discovery that partially answers the long-standing question of why a mother's immune system does not reject a developing fetus as foreign tissue.
Offspring of Childhood Cancer Survivors Have No Increased Risk for Birth Defects
A large, retrospective study of the children of childhood cancer survivors who were treated with radiation therapy and/or some forms of chemotherapy found that the offspring do not have an increased risk for birth defects compared to children of cancer survivors who did not receive such treatments.
Women with Arthritis or Lupus Give Birth to Fewer Children
A University of Nebraska Medical Center researcher played a key role in a national survey that determined that more than half of women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have fewer children than desired.
Researchers have found the cells at the origin of cervical cancer, in a discovery that could offer new ways to prevent and treat the disease.
Most cases of cervical cancer are known to be caused by specific strains of human papillomavirus (HPV), but now researchers know the specific group of cells that HPV targets, according to the study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
IVFCPD Module #8 Laboratory Controlled Aspects of IVF Culture Media [This link may be from a sponsor]
Commercial production of culture media has helped standardize this aspect of the IVF laboratory and improved quality control. However, there are still aspects of the culture media, outside of its selection, that are still directly controlled within the laboratory that can impact embryo development. These parameters include pH, temperature and osmolality. Careful attention to detail during media preparation and embryo culture are required to optim
IVFCPD Module #7 - Understanding Failed Fertilisation [This link may be from a sponsor]
This is a review and summary of an article by Swain and Pool (2008) on the reasons for fertilisation failure. When completed, the participant may have a better understanding why fertilisation sometime does not work. Appropriate for nursing and scientific staff.
