The Alpha consensus meeting on cryopreservation key performance indicators and benchmarks: proceedings of an expert meeting
This proceedings report presents the outcomes from an international workshop designed to establish consensus on: definitions for key performance indicators (KPIs) for oocyte and embryo cryopreservation, using either slow freezing or vitrification: minimum performance level values for each KPIs, representing basic competency: and aspirational benchmark values for each KPI, representing best practice goals
Disclosure patterns of embryo donation mothers compared with adoption and IVF
Embryo donation mothers were far less likely to share information with the child: 43% were inclined towards disclosing, compared with all adoptive mothers and nearly 90% of IVF mothers. Furthermore, embryo donation and IVF mothers who had disclosed had often only given partial explanations of the child’s conception. Differences between embryo donation and adoption in particular should be taken into account when advising embryo recipients.
Chronic exposure to acrylamide induces DNA damage in male germ cells of mice
After 12 months of exposure, increases in damage were detected at doses as low as 0.01µg/ml (0.001 mg/kg bodyweight/day). The results of this study are the first to demonstrate that chronic exposure to acrylamide, at doses equivalent to human exposures, generates DNA damage in male germ cells of mice.
Ovarian reserve status in young women is associated with altered gene expression in membrana granulosa cells
We conclude that gene expression analysis has substantial potential to determine which young women may be affected with DOR. More importantly, our analysis suggests that DOR patients fall into two distinct subgroups based on gene expression profiles, indicating that different mechanisms may be involved during development of this pathology.
Active DNA demethylation in mammalian preimplantation embryos: new insights and new perspectives
Most importantly we summarize the importance of active DNA demethylation and its possible relevance to human IVF clinics. Finally research perspectives regarding DNA demethylation are also discussed.
First trimester prenatal screening among women pregnant after IVF/ICSI
Our analysis of the data shows that, for IVF/ICSI singletons, combined first trimester prenatal screening based on maternal age, nuchal translucency scan and biomarkers is appropriate. However, biomarkers seem to be altered, causing a higher false-positive rate, in IVF/ICSI singleton gestations. Correction factors have been developed and should be used when screening for Down's syndrome in singleton pregnancies
Cigarette smoke-induced transgenerational alterations in genome stability in cord blood of human F1 offspring
Taken together, these studies reveal a role for cigarette smoke in the induction of DNA alterations in human F1 offspring via exposures of the fetus in utero or the paternal germline. Moreover, the identification of transgenerational DNA alterations in the unexposed F1 offspring of smoking-exposed fathers supports the claim that cigarette smoke is a human germ cell mutagen.
NHS payout for children fathered by nephew sperm donor
Two children of a lesbian couple are due to receive £70,000 compensation from the NHS after a mistake led to the death of their sperm donor father. The man was also the nephew of one of the couple. Six-year-old Carlton Ashman and his sister, four-year-old Sarah, were secretly fathered by Charlie Lowden, who died after a hernia operation. At the age of 15, Lowden donated sperm to Claire Ashman, 31, the civil partner of his aunt, Sarah Ashman. His
Long-Term Testosterone Treatment for Men Results in Reduced Weight and Waist Size
In testosterone-deficient men, major weight loss was an added benefit of testosterone replacement therapy for most of the patients who participated in a new study. The results will be presented June 23 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.
Another Reason Why Dads and Hopeful Dads Should Quit Smoking Now
If he smoked, your genes are likely damaged, and your odds for cancers and other diseases throughout your life could be increased. A new report in FASEB Journal, scientists show for the first time in humans that men who smoke before conception can damage the genetic information of their offspring. These inherited changes in DNA could possibly render an offspring in the womb susceptible to later disease such as cancer.

Surgeons have removed a tumour from the mouth of a foetus, in what has been described as a "world first" procedure. After a scan at 17 weeks, mother Tammy Gonzalez said she "could see a bubble" coming out of her baby's mouth.
Doctors said it was a very rare tumour called an oral teratoma and there was little chance her daughter would survive.
The LNP has made the shock announcement that it will remove the right of same sex couples to have a baby by altruistic surrogacy. Queensland Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said de facto couples of less than two years and singles will also be banned. The comments were made during a debate on rolling back provisions of Labor's Civil Partnerships Act. They'll now be known as registered relationships and couples won't have access to a state-sanction
Sunscreen Ingredient May Be Linked to Endometriosis
Scientists are reporting a possible link between the use of sunscreen containing a certain ingredient that mimics the effects of the female sex hormone estrogen and an increased risk of being diagnosed with endometriosis, a painful condition in which uterine tissue grows outside the uterus.
Changes to NICE fertility guideline for same-sex couples
As Britain's leading lesbian, gay and bisexual equality charity, Stonewall welcome the decision by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to update its fertility guidance to recognise recent changes in the law that will affect lesbian and bisexual women. The guidance, out to consultation, explicitly includes same-sex couples as an eligible group for fertility treatment.
Lesley Brown, the first woman to give birth after undergoing IVF treatment, has died aged 64. She made history when her daughter Louise was born in 1978 at Oldham General Hospital. Her daughter said that she was a very private person 'who ended up in the world spotlight because she wanted a family so much'. Lesley died at the Bristol Royal Infirmary on 6 June after a short illness.

IVFCPD Module #7 - Understanding Failed Fertilisation [This link may be from a sponsor]
This is a review and summary of an article by Swain and Pool (2008) on the reasons for fertilisation failure. When completed, the participant may have a better understanding why fertilisation sometime does not work. Appropriate for nursing and scientific staff.
IVFCPD Module #8 Laboratory Controlled Aspects of IVF Culture Media [This link may be from a sponsor]
Commercial production of culture media has helped standardize this aspect of the IVF laboratory and improved quality control. However, there are still aspects of the culture media, outside of its selection, that are still directly controlled within the laboratory that can impact embryo development. These parameters include pH, temperature and osmolality. Careful attention to detail during media preparation and embryo culture are required to optim

The cover shows DNA methylation patterns in mammalian embryos. (A) 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC) signals appear in the zygotic PPN (F, red) of the mouse. From the 2-cell embryo through the blastocyst stage, 5-hmC signals can be detected in cell nuclei
