The dynamics of the vaginal microbiome during infertility therapy with in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer.
CONCLUSIONS:This metagenomics approach has enabled discovery of novel, previously unidentified bacterial species in the human vagina in different hormonal milieu and supports a shift in the vaginal microbiome during IVF-ET therapy using standard protocols. Furthermore, the data suggest that the vaginal microbiome on the day of embryo transfer affects pregnancy outcome.
Delivery mode shapes the acquisition and structure of the initial microbiota across multiple body habitats in newborns
Our results also show that vaginally delivered infants acquired bacterial communities resembling their own mother's vaginal microbiota, dominated by Lactobacillus, Prevotella, or Sneathia spp., and C-section infants harbored bacterial communities similar to those found on the skin surface, dominated by Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, and Propionibacterium spp.
Human sperm devoid of PLC, zeta 1 fail to induce Ca2+ release and are unable to initiate the first step of embryo development
Using mouse eggs, we reproduced the failure of sperm from these patients to induce egg activation and rescued it by injection of mouse Plcz1 mRNA. Together, our results indicate that the inability of human sperm to initiate [Ca2+]i oscillations leads to failure of egg activation and sterility and that abnormal PLCZ1 expression underlies this functional defect.
The Alpha consensus meeting on cryopreservation key performance indicators and benchmarks: proceedings of an expert meeting
This proceedings report presents the outcomes from an international workshop designed to establish consensus on: definitions for key performance indicators (KPIs) for oocyte and embryo cryopreservation, using either slow freezing or vitrification: minimum performance level values for each KPIs, representing basic competency: and aspirational benchmark values for each KPI, representing best practice goals
Total quality improvement in the IVF laboratory: choosing indicators of quality
The purpose of this paper is to describe a programme of total quality improvement (TQI) within the IVF laboratory and to provide specific examples of indicators that could be used in such a TQI programme. Although TQI is sometimes confused with quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA), there are major differences between the three quality plans
ART failure: oocyte contributions to unsuccessful fertilization -Jason E. Swain1 and Thomas B. Pool
Although meticulous care and continued research is essential for future improvement, failure to fertilize and properly form PN following clinical ART is likely to be dependent on historical events in oocyte maturation, not easily explained or prevented through simple modification of contemporary laboratory protocols.
Prenatal Exposure to Common Household Chemical, Phthalate, Increases Risk for Childhood Eczema
Prenatal exposure to a ubiquitous household chemical called butylbenzyl phthalate (BBzP) can increase a child's risk for developing eczema, according to research conducted at the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health at the Mailman School of Public Health.

Fatty diets may be associated with reduced semen quality
The study of 99 men in the USA found an association between a high total fat intake and lower total sperm count and concentration. It also found that men who ate more omega-3 polyunsaturated fats (the type of fat often found in fish and plant oils) had better formed sperm than men who ate less. [ESHRE News]
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) provide the most effective emergency contraception
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) should be used routinely to provide emergency contraception, according to the authors of the first systematic review of all available data from the past 35 years. They found that IUDs had a failure rate of less than one per thousand and were a more effective form of emergency contraception than the “morning after pill”. ESHRE News

IVFCPD Module #7 - Understanding Failed Fertilisation [This link may be from a sponsor]
This is a review and summary of an article by Swain and Pool (2008) on the reasons for fertilisation failure. When completed, the participant may have a better understanding why fertilisation sometime does not work. Appropriate for nursing and scientific staff.
IVFCPD Module #8 Laboratory Controlled Aspects of IVF Culture Media [This link may be from a sponsor]
Commercial production of culture media has helped standardize this aspect of the IVF laboratory and improved quality control. However, there are still aspects of the culture media, outside of its selection, that are still directly controlled within the laboratory that can impact embryo development. These parameters include pH, temperature and osmolality. Careful attention to detail during media preparation and embryo culture are required to optim
