Effects of cigarette smoking upon clinical outcomes of assisted reproduction: a meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis provides compelling evidence for a significant negative effect of cigarette smoking upon clinical outcomes of ART and should be presented to infertility patients who smoke cigarettes in order to optimize success rates.
Hospitalizations for psychiatric disorders in women with fertility problems – a large Danish register-based cohort study B. Baldur-Felskov
1
Our results showed that women with fertility problems who did not have a
child after the initial infertility evaluation may face an increased risk for psychiatric disorders including abuse, schizophrenia/psychoses and other mental disorders, but a decreased risk for depression. Our study thus adds an important component to the counselling of women with fertility problems.
Cumulative Birth Rates with Linked Assisted Reproductive Technology Cycles
Our results indicate that live-birth rates approaching natural fecundity can be achieved by means of assisted reproductive technology when there are favorable patient and embryo characteristics. Live-birth rates among older women are lower than those among younger women when autologous oocytes are used but are similar to the rates among young women when donor oocytes are used.
FERTILE women with genes that predispose them to breast and ovarian cancer are using IVF to select embryos without the genes so their children are free of the distress they cause.
In a new trend that has heightened ethicists' fears of ''designer babies'', Australian IVF specialists said women with mutations of genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2 were spending thousands of dollars on a technique called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to select n
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis for IVF 'is safe'
Taking an eighth of a developing embryo during IVF treatment to test for genetic diseases is "completely safe", according to the largest study of babies born following the technique. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) can help doctors spot diseases like cystic fibrosis before deciding whether to continue with fertility treatment.
FERTILE women with genes that predispose them to breast and ovarian cancers are using IVF treatment at two Melbourne clinics to select embryos without the genes. In a new trend that has heightened ethicists' fears of ''designer babies'', Australian IVF specialists say women are spending thousands of dollars on a technique called preimplantation genetic diagnosis to select embryos without the same genetic issues.
The prevention of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer by PGD is 'feasible', following analysis of Europe's biggest patient series
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for the breast cancer genes BRCA1/2 is now feasible and established, with good success rates for those treated, according to investigators from the reproduction, oncology and genetics centres of the university hospitals of Maastricht and Brussels.
Childless women with fertility problems at 18% higher risk of hospitalisation for psychiatric disorders: Significant results from a large population s
Istanbul, 2 July 2012: While many small studies have shown a relationship between infertility and psychological distress, reporting a high prevalence of anxiety, mood disorders and depressive symptoms, few have studied the psychological effect of childlessness on a large population basis
Five million "test tube babies" have now been born around the world, according to research presented at a conference of fertility experts.
Delegates hailed it as a "remarkable milestone" for fertility treatments.
The world's number of IVF and ICSI babies has now reached a calculated total of 5 million
The number of babies born as a result of assisted reproduction technologies (ART) has reached an estimated total of 5 million since the world's first, Louise Brown, was born in July 1978. The figures will be presented this week at the 28th annual meeting of ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology), which begins today, 1st July, in Istanbul, Turkey.
New Hormonal Gel Combination Shows Promise as Reversible Birth Control for Men
Very low sperm counts resulted for about 89 percent of men using a new combination of hormones, the authors reported. They combined a transdermal (skin) gel containing the male hormone testosterone and a gel containing a new synthetic progestin called Nestorone.
Do Women's Voices Really Allow Men to Detect Ovulation? No, Says New Study
The voice can reveal a lot about a person - their sex, their age, how they are feeling - and recent studies have even suggested that women's voices might also contain cues that men can read about how close they are to ovulation. A new study, however, published in the journal PLoS ONE, challenges the view that women broadcast reproductive information in their voice.
Research Into Eating Disorders and Fertility Reveals Mixed Picture
Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are associated with fertility problems and negative attitudes to pregnancy, according to a UK study. The research also revealed high rates of unplanned pregnancies in women with a history of anorexia, suggesting they may be underestimating their chances of conceiving. The study is to be published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Antioxidants of Growing Interest to Address Infertility, Erectile Dysfunction
A growing body of evidence suggests that antioxidants may have significant value in addressing infertility issues in both women and men, including erectile dysfunction, and researchers say that large, specific clinical studies are merited to determine how much they could help.
Success of Fertility Treatment May Approach Natural Birth Rate
A groundbreaking study of nearly 250,000 U.S. women reveals live birth rates approaching natural fertility can be achieved using assisted reproductive technology, where eggs are removed from a woman's ovaries, combined with sperm and then returned to the woman's body
Children Born After Unplanned Pregnancy Are Slower to Develop, UK Study Finds
Children born after unplanned pregnancies tend to have a more limited vocabulary and poorer non-verbal and spatial abilities: however this is almost entirely explained by their disadvantaged circumstances, according to a new study published online in the British Medical Journal. The same study reported no adverse effects of infertility treatment on the children.
Why smoking is 'BAD' for the Fallopian tube - and increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy
The research is exciting because it provides new scientific evidence to help understand why women who smoke are more likely to have ectopic pregnancies. It appears that smoking reduces the production of genes such as BAD which are involved in the control of cell death and promote an environment in the Fallopian tube which is attractive to the developing embryo.
Five or more cups of coffee a day reduce the chance of IVF success by around 50 per cent
Women who drink five or more cups of coffee a day severely reduce their chance of success from IVF treatment. Indeed, Danish investigators who followed up almost 4000 IVF and ICSI patients described the adverse impact as "comparable to the detrimental effect of smoking"
Higher levels of public reimbursement positively influence national birth rates and reduce unmet needs in subfertile populations
The state funding of fertility treatment through public reimbursement policies has a direct influence on national birth rates. Lower levels of reimbursement are correlated with higher unmet needs for treatment, while more generous reimbursement policies increase access to treatment and may even make a measurable contribution to national birth rates.
A high intake of certain dietary fats associated with lower live birth rates, decreased oocyte number and poorer embryo quality in IVF
Women with a higher intake of dietary saturated fats have fewer mature oocytes available for collection in IVF, according to results of a study from the Harvard School of Public Health funded by the US National Institutes of Health.
