Ovastacin, a cortical granule protease, cleaves ZP2 in the zona pellucida to prevent polyspermy
Ovastacin is a pioneer component of mouse cortical granules and plays a definitive role in the postfertilization block to sperm binding that ensures monospermic fertilization and successful development.
Revealing the Hidden Mechanisms of Smoke-Induced Fallopian Tubal Implantation1
Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is an enigmatic reproductive disorder. Although tubal EP is difficult to predict, several hypotheses about its etiology have been proposed. In retrospective case-control studies, smoking is associated with an increased rate of EPs in the fallopian tube.
Increased zona pellucida thickness and meiotic spindle disruption in oocytes from cigarette smoking mice
We have used a novel model of inhalational cigarette smoking to show that chronic smoking has a detrimental effect on oocyte quality, and this can be observed even though oocytes are removed from the ovary and cultured in vitro.
Cigarette Smoke Exposure Leads to Follicle Loss via an Alternative Ovarian Cell Death Pathway in a Mouse Model
Taken together, our results suggest that CS exposure does not induce apoptosis but rather activates the Atg pathway ultimately leading to ovarian follicle loss. We further postulate that Atg is a novel mechanism of toxicant-induced ovarian follicle loss.
Contemporary genetic technologies and female reproduction
The way forward in advancing the knowledge of genes involved in reproduction was considered to be through genome-wide association studies involving large numbers of patients. Establishing international collaboration is required to enable the application of such technologies in sufficient numbers of patients.
Breast Cancer Risk After Use of Fertility Drugs: Stimulating New Controversy
Although a reduced risk associated with drug usage was noted overall, this association was not observed among women who conceived as a result of treatment and who subsequently carried their pregnancies for at least 10 weeks
Fertility Drugs and Young-Onset Breast Cancer: Results From the Two Sister Study
In the absence of a 10+ week pregnancy under treatment, exposure to ovulation-stimulating fertility drugs was associated with reduced risk of young-onset breast cancer. This apparent association was absent in women who conceived a 10+ week pregnancy under treatment, for whom risk was higher than that of unsuccessfully treated women, but similar to that of untreated women.
All stages of reproductive functions are targets of cigarette smoke toxicants. Further studies are necessary to better understand the deleterious effects of cigarette smoke compounds on the reproductive system in order to improve health care, help to reduce cigarette smoking and provide a better knowledge of the molecular mechanisms involved in reproductive toxicology.
Scientists Discover Tool That Uncrosses Chromosomes
Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have discovered a key tool that helps sperm and eggs develop exactly 23 chromosomes each. The work, which could lead to insights into fertility, spontaneous miscarriages, cancer and developmental disorders, is published April 13 in the journal Cell.
Australian researchers have discovered that the rate of perinatal deaths in IVF (in vitro fertilisation) can be considerably reduced when only one embryo is used in the fertility treatment. Researchers at the University of NSW say Australia is leading the world in single embryo IVF transfers and they are using a conference in Istanbul to get the message out to the rest of the world.
Unsuccessful Fertility Drug Users Have Reduced Breast Cancer Risk, Study Suggests
Women using fertility drugs who did not conceive a 10-plus week pregnancy were at a statistically significant reduced risk of breast cancer compared to nonusers: however, women using the drugs who conceived a 10-plus week pregnancy had a statistically significant increased risk of breast cancer compared to unsuccessfully treated women, but a comparable risk to nonusers, according to a study published July 6 in the Journal of The National Cancer
Most women do not know when they are ovulating, and neither do the overwhelming majority of men. To be fair, it is pretty subtle. After all, if men can't tell when a bathroom needs cleaning, or the garbage emptying, what hope have they got with ovulation?
Fertility Preservation With Cryopreservation of Ovarian Tissue: From Experimental to Mainstream
Although the first successful preservation of fertility from the freezing, thawing and grafting of ovarian tissue was reported eight years ago,(1) the technique has remained experimental and confined to a few specialist centres. Now, with the announcement of a first pregnancy (and subsequent live birth) in Italy following the transplantation of ovarian tissue, there are indications that fertility preservation is moving into the mainstream of repr
Single Embryo Transfer Reduces the Risk of Perinatal Mortality in IVF
A policy of single embryo transfer (SET) reduces the risk of perinatal mortality in infants born as a result of IVF and ICSI. The conclusion emerged from an analysis of more than 50,000 births recorded in the Australian and New Zealand Assisted Reproduction Technology Database between 2004 and 2008, where the introduction of an SET policy has been associated with a reduction in overall perinatal mortality for IVF and ICSI babies.
Sequencing of Fetal Genomes Using Only Maternal Blood Sample
Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have for the first time sequenced the genome of an unborn baby using only a blood sample from the mother
Time-lapse photography has shown that embryos of smoking women develop more slowly. French academics in an IVF clinic took regular pictures of an egg from the moment it was fertilised until it was ready to be implanted into the mother. At all stages of development, embryos from smokers were consistently a couple of hours behind, a study showed.
Researchers have described how a secreted protease helps egg cells avoid being fertilized by more than one sperm. Because polyspermy disrupts embryonic development, oocytes take several steps to ensure they only fuse with a single sperm
Survey: PH Measurement In The IVF Laboratory [This link may be from a sponsor]
Comment:Recent discussions in EmbryoMail have centred around the measurement of pH. Should you use a CO2 monitor or a pH meter? This survey seeks to canvass the current status of pH measurement in the IVF laboratory.
