Comment:Some links to IRVINE Scientific WebCasts from ESHRE. Pretty interesting. Plus a new survey on Blastocyst vitrification. Two links to TEDx talks - one fertility after cancer and one great musical treat (play this while dong ICSI!). A few links to recent articles on miscarriage as well. Two CPD units for your nursing and embryology staff.

Isolated primate primordial follicles require a rigid physical environment to survive and grow in vitro
By mimicking the rigid ovarian environment through the use of biomaterials, we have established conditions that support primordial follicle culture. These results lay the foundations for studying the basic biology of primordial follicles in a controlled environment and for using primordial follicles for fertility preservation methods.
Accreditation and the use of validated/recognised methods to analyse human semen. Ian Leonard Pike
Evidence of the validation must be available for review by external auditors during accreditation. Where any validated variant method returns results that are significantly different to any method within the WHO-manual, the laboratory needs to develop its own, in-house reference interval for that method.
Epigenetics and vitrification of embryos: one step forward and many raised equivocal questions
As Zhao et al. (1) correctly cite, the H19 putative imprinted control region regulates embryogenesis and fetoplacental differentiation through expression of IGF2 and may be sensitive to COS and in vitro gamete and embryo manipulation, possibly leading to diseases of dominant inheritance in ART/IVF neonates. The authors explain that since de novo methylation usually occurs at the 8- to 16-cell stage in bovine embryos, they cultured the vitrified-t
Testosterone concentrations, using different assays, in different types of ovarian insufficiency: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS The current meta-analysis demonstrates that total testosterone concentrations are decreased in women with spontaneous POI or iatrogenic menopause. The potential implications of hypoandrogenism in these women remain to be elucidated.
Reproductive outcome after PGD in couples with recurrent miscarriage carrying a structural chromosome abnormality: a systematic review
Currently, there are insufficient data indicating that PGD improves the live birth rate in couples with RM carrying a structural chromosome abnormality.
SRM is more common after the birth of a boy and the subsequent live birth rate is reduced for SRM patients with a firstborn boy. The male:female ratio of children born prior and subsequent to SRM is 1.49 and 0.76 respectively.
Unexplained recurrent miscarriage: how can we explain it?
Epidemiological associations suggest that the reason for this is that the majority of women with unexplained RM are in fact healthy individuals, with no underlying pathology, who have suffered three miscarriages purely by chance. Nevertheless, a certain proportion of women with unexplained RM will continue to miscarry, and preliminary studies suggest the presence of pathology in some women of this group.
Day 3 embryo selection by metabolomic profiling of culture medium with near-infrared spectroscopy as an adjunct to morphology: a randomized controlled
In 75.4% (104 of 138) of the transfers, the embryo with the best morphology did not have the highest viability score. The live birth rate of these 104 transferred embryos was 30.8%.
Some foundations of contemporary methods for culturing preimplantation embryos: a personal account. Ray G. Wales
This article traces the history of the work on mammalian embryos carried out by the author, his students and related scientists. It traces the work from the initial experiments at the King Ranch Laboratories, University of Pennsylvania in 1966, the set up of an embryo culture laboratory at the Department of Veterinary Physiology, University of Sydney and the work within that laboratory from 1967 to 1974.
Women who smoke marijuana before pregnancy double risk of giving birth prematurely
WOMEN who use marijuana before pregnancy double their risk of giving birth prematurely, a new study shows. The University of Adelaide study surveyed 3000 Australian and New Zealand women to determine the risk factors for pre-term births.
Review - Embryo Selection by near-infrared spectroscopy
The clinical and the live birth rate was the same in both the morphology [31.7%] only and the NIS selected group [26.8%]. In 71% of cases, the best embryo based upon NIS scoring was NOT the best embryo selected by morphology.
Review - Influence Of Media On Birth Weight After SET.
Therefore This Paper Seeks To Address A Lingering Issue Of Whether Media May Cause 'Large Baby Syndrome' As Described In Cattle. While The Number Of Cases Is Small And The Media Type Were Similar, Comparisons, Their Conclusions Were Of Value.
Survey:Blastocyst Vitrification [This link may be from a sponsor]
Comment:Many clinics routinely vitrify blastocysts but there is little information on how often the cavity is collapsed before vitrification and hatched after warming. This quick survey seeks to find out how common these techniques are.
IVFCPD Module #8 Laboratory Controlled Aspects of IVF Culture Media [This link may be from a sponsor]
Commercial production of culture media has helped standardize this aspect of the IVF laboratory and improved quality control. However, there are still aspects of the culture media, outside of its selection, that are still directly controlled within the laboratory that can impact embryo development. These parameters include pH, temperature and osmolality. Careful attention to detail during media preparation and embryo culture are required to optim
IVFCPD Module #7 - Understanding Failed Fertilisation [This link may be from a sponsor]
This is a review and summary of an article by Swain and Pool (2008) on the reasons for fertilisation failure. When completed, the participant may have a better understanding why fertilisation sometime does not work. Appropriate for nursing and scientific staff.
Most embryologists would agree that it is good to have a positive air flow from the laboratory outwards but how important is a true clean room environment given that there is often open door access to theatres, concerns over VOC from dishes, lines, laminar flow units and other electrical equipment. I have always been a supporter of using enclosed work stations like those made by HD Scientific together with activate charcoal dishes inside the cham
I am interested in what types of KPI clinics use for their quality programme. More importantly, how do you break up the data by age or patient type. I ask because I am looking to create a standardised benchmarking set for clinic to use.
TEDxNorthwesternU: Teresa K. Woodruff, PhD - Fertility after Cancer
Ten years ago the phrase 'families after cancer' would have been an oxymoron if thought of at all. Today, due to the impressive rise in cancer survivors, this is not only a well-used phrase, but also an issue that needs further exploration. To address this concern we created the Oncofertility Consortium, a national, interdisciplinary initiative and uncommon team, to explore and expand the reproductive options for young cancer patients - men, wome
Usman Riaz and Preston Reed: A young guitarist meets his hero - Music when performing!! ICSI
Preston Reed’s hands have an otherworldly coordination. The fingers, nails, thumbs, and palms of both left and right dance, pluck, strum, and slap his guitar, which bursts with a full sound - Something a bit different.
In this prophetic 2003 talk - just days before Dolly the sheep was stuffed - biotech ethicist Gregory Stock looked forward to new, more meaningful (and controversial) technologies, like customizable babies, whose adoption might drive human evolution.
