In a recent Debate article in this journal, Scriven et al. reacted to the publication of the results of the proof of principle study of the ESHRE Task Force Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS)
Psychological stress and reproductive aging among pre-menopausal women
Psychological stress was related to higher AFC among younger women and greater AFC decline across women, suggesting that greater stress may enhance reproductive readiness in the short term at the cost of accelerating reproductive aging in the long term. Findings are preliminary, however, due to the cross-sectional nature of the current study.
A method for semi-automatic grading of human blastocyst microscope images
Semi-automatic grading of human blastocysts by a computer is feasible and may offer a more precise comparison of embryos, reducing subjectivity and allowing embryos with apparently identical morphological scores to be distinguished.
Advanced remote imaging technology that enables real-time monitoring of preimplantation development has undoubtedly become one of the most exciting new ‘hot topics’ in clinical embryology. This year’s European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE)meeting in Istanbul featured an afternoon session (Embryo in Motion) during which five different teams discussed their experience and results and more data were presented in 15 of the post
Cleavage kinetics analysis of human embryos predicts development to blastocyst and implantation
In embryos developing to blastocyst, absence of blastocoele expansion on day 5 was associated with progressive cleavage delay. Implanting embryos developed to 8-cell stage in a shorter period compared with those unable to implant. In conclusion, cleavage from 2- to 8-cell stage occurs progressively earlier in embryos with the ability to develop to blastocyst, expand and implant. Conventional observation times on days 2 and 3 are inappropriate for
Dose of recombinant FSH and oestradiol concentration on day of HCG affect embryo development kinetics
In contrast, for gonadotrophin dosage and oestradiol concentration, this study observed differences in embryo development kinetics for some of the variables evaluated, which allowed the description of an optimal range of gonadotrophin dosage and oestradiol concentration. However, these kinetic differences did not translate into important distinctions in the proportion of optimal embryos with a higher implantation potential.
In this image, the sperm tail fi brous sheath is observed immediately after fertilization (top embryo), and remains associated with the male pronucleus in the 1-cell embryo (female pronucleus not in plane of image). In the
2-cell embryos, the sperm tail fibrous sheath is associated
with the nucleus of one blastomere.
Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.
Betaine homocysteine methyltransferase is active in the mouse blastocyst and promotes inner cell mass development
Thus, mouse blastocysts are unusual in being able to generate SAM not only by the ubiquitous folate-dependent mechanism but also from betaine metabolized by BHMT, likely a significant pool of methyl groups in blastocysts.
Delay in oocyte aging in mice by the antioxidant N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC)
Short-term treatment of mice for 2 months with NAC demonstrated that NAC improved the quality of fertilized oocytes and early embryo development. Mice treated with a long-term low concentration (0.1 mM) of NAC had increased litter sizes at the ages of 7–10 months compared with age-matched controls without NAC treatment.
Mouse Embryos Stressed by Physiological Levels of Osmolarity Become Arrested in the Late 2-Cell Stage Before Entry into M Phase
Thus, embryos become arrested late in the G2 stage of the second embryonic cell cycle when stressed by physiological osmolarity in the absence of organic osmolytes.
Unexplained first trimester recurrent pregnancy loss and low venous reserves
Women with URPL have lower venous reserves when compared with controls at comparable arterial demand. Interventions that increase venous reserve may improve pregnancy outcome.
ART culture conditions change the probability of mouse embryo gestation through defined cellular and molecular responses
Our data promote awareness that human ART culture media affect embryo development. Effects reported here in the mouse may apply also in human, because no ART medium presently available on the market has been optimized for human embryo development. The mouse embryo assay (MEA), which requires ART media to support at least 80% blastocyst formation, is in need of reform and should be extended to include post-implantation development.

The 10th International Congress of Andrology (ICA 2013) will be held in Melbourne, Victoria Australia from 23-26 February 2013. The Congress is presented by the International Society of Andrology and the Fertility Society of Australia.
Survey:Blastocyst Vitrification [This link may be from a sponsor]
Comment:Many clinics routinely vitrify blastocysts but there is little information on how often the cavity is collapsed before vitrification and hatched after warming. This quick survey seeks to find out how common these techniques are.
