An embryo cleavage pattern based on the relative blastomere size as a function of cell number for predicting implantation outcome
When combined with measurements of the cleavage rate and degree of fragmentation, the cleavage pattern refines our ability to predict the likelihood of implantation, representing a definitive tool in the selection of top-quality embryos.
Oocyte vitrification does not increase the risk of embryonic aneuploidy or diminish the implantation potential of blastocysts created after ICSI: a no
Although the IVF process is less efficient after oocyte vitrification, implantation rates are equivalent and there is no increased risk of aneuploidy. Given the lack of other viable options, this study provides great reassurance to patients and clinicians applying oocyte vitrification for fertility preservation.
Comparison of two ready-to-use systems designed for sperm–hyaluronic acid binding selection before ICSI: PICSI vs. Sperm Slow: a prospective, randomiz
The good-quality embryo rate was comparable between the two groups (58.5% with PICSI vs. 56% with Sperm Slow). Overall there were no statistically significant differences in secondary outcome measures except ICSI procedure duration, which was 3 minutes longer in the PICSI group. Both PICSI and Sperm Slow allow comparable clinical efficiency in selecting HA-bound spermatozoa.
The effect of sperm DNA fragmentation on miscarriage rates: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Meta-analysis showed a significant increase in miscarriage in patients with high DNA damage compared with those with low DNA damage [risk ratio (RR) = 2.16 (1.54, 3.03), P < 0.00001)]. A subgroup analysis showed that the miscarriage association is strongest for the TUNEL assay (RR = 3.94 (2.45, 6.32), P < 0.00001).
Implications of oocyte cryostorage for the practice of oocyte donation
These practices may have an impact on the number of available donor oocytes due to two different dynamics: first, a certain percentage of women for whom oocytes were cryopreserved will eventually not use their oocytes and may decide to donate them to others: secondly, especially in the practice of social freezing, women may opt to donate a portion of the retrieved oocytes in ‘freeze-and-share’ schemes in order to reduce the costs.
Clinical Implications of the New 2010 WHO Reference Ranges for Human Semen Characteristics
It remains to be seen just how many institutions will adopt the new reference values. More importantly, how these reference values will be utilized by health care providers in clinical decision making is still unknown.
In the event of the unexpected death of a male patient, urologists may be called upon by the patient's partner, spouse, or relatives to perform a sperm extraction. This procedure, known as cadaveric sperm retrieval, is clouded by controversy and, in some instances, lack of clarity regarding ethics and the law.
A variety of sperm DNA damage evaluation techniques are currently available. These include the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay, comet assay, sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA), and others. Although there are some technical differences among them, they all essentially detect spermatozoa with fragmented or damaged DNA.
Commentary on the article “Ten years' experience with an external quality control program for semen analysis” [Needs subscription!!]
The article by Mallidis et al. on an external quality control program for semen analysis in Germany is important, and they must be congratulated on their efforts (1). They highlighted specific problems in the performance of the basic semen analysis within laboratories and the low adherence to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.
Ten years' experience with an external quality control program for semen analysis
Adherence to WHO recommendations is low, with the majority of laboratories using methods expressly opposed by the guidelines. Participation in QuaDeGA was found to improve the performance of the laboratories involved in the program. However, the use of median-based ranking, while decreasing the extent of variance between laboratories, brings into question the significance of the rankings
Why the WHO (1999)Recommendations for Eosin-Nigrosin Staining Techniques for Human Sperm Vitality Assessment Must Change [Pub 2004]
[ed Found this old article, still of interest!].The inevitable conclusion is that none of the protocols for human sperm vitality assessment in the most recent WHO manual have been properly validated. The protocols deviate significantly from the published validations on which they are supposed to be based, and it appears as if the reasons for modifications have been editorial rather than scientific. For future editions of the WHO manual, it is mand
Congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens: clinical characteristics, biological parameters, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator
Conclusion(s): A palpable scrotal vas deferens was found in 13% of CBAVD patients. Semen volume of ≤:1.0 mL and semen pH of <7.0 in CBAVD patients were associated with a higher risk of severe CFTR gene mutations. Patients with CBAVD and renal agenesis should be screened for CFTR gene mutations before assisted reproductive techniques are used.
Protamine contents and P1/P2 ratio in human spermatozoa from smokers and non-smokers
CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to evaluate the effect of smoking on protamines. Abnormal elevation of the P1/P2 ratio appears to be associated with aberrant P2 expression in smokers. These results suggest that induced oxidative stress by cigarette smoking may have significant inverse effect on the protamination process by disrupting P2.
The association between severe obesity and characteristics of failed fertilized oocytes
Significantly more oocytes from the severely obese group exhibited two spindles compared with those from the normal BMI group (58.9 versus 35.1%: OR = 2.68, CI = 1.39–5.15, P-value = 0.003). (ii) :Among oocytes with a single spindle, those from severely obese patients showed a significantly higher prevalence of disarranged spindles with non-aligned chromosomes compared with those from normal BMI patients (28.6 versus 8.6%: OR = 4.58, CI = 1.
Why Severely Obese Women Have Difficulty Getting Pregnant from IVF
One third of American women of childbearing age are battling obesity, a condition that affects their health and their chances of getting pregnant. Obese women often have poor reproductive outcomes, but the reasons why have not been clearly identified. Now, a novel study led by Catherine Racowsky, PhD, director of the Assisted Reproductive Technologies Laboratory at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), and performed by Ronit Machtinger, M.D., of BW
CDP011-Osmolality of culture media [This link may be from a sponsor]
Osmolality is a measure of the pressure exerted by dissolved substances in a solution. Cells in solutions like the fluid of their in vivo environment or in culture media are subject to osmotic pressure. Cells, including embryos, control their sizes by adjusting their intracellular osmotic pressure. This module describes the importance of osmolality and cell volume regulation in embryo culture and viability. On completion, there should be an appre
When semen changes from its usual cream-white colour to white with 'a hint of pink', or is bloodstained, it's called haemospermia, which simply means blood in the semen. The semen can also appear brownish-red in colour. Whatever the shade, it isn't normal and means something is not right and should be checked out.
