IVFD Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) for Genetic Prion Disorder Due to F198S Mutation in the PRNP Gene
IVF with PGD is a viable option for couples who wish to avoid passing the disease to their offspring. Neurologists should be aware of PGD to be able to better consult at-risk families on their reproductive choices. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) with in vitro fertilization (IVF) has emerged as an important option for at-risk couples wishing to conceive a healthy child without a fatal or severely debilitating inherited disorder.1,2 PGD al

IVFD FOXL2 Is a Female Sex-Determining Gene in the Goat
Our analysis demonstrates that FOXL2 loss of function dissociated from loss of lncRNA expression is sufficient to cause an XX female-to-male sex reversal in the goat model and, as in the mouse model, an agenesis of eyelids. Both developmental defects were reproduced in two newborn animals cloned from the XX FOXL2−:/−: fibroblasts. These results therefore identify FOXL2 as a bona fide female sex-determining gene in the goat. They also hi

IVFD Hypo-glycosylated human follicle-stimulating hormone (hFSH21/18) is much more active in vitro than fully-glycosylated hFSH (hFSH24)
Carbohydrate heterogeneity results in FSH preparations composed of populations of acidic isoforms. The ratios of these isoforms have been shown to vary under physiological conditions, with the less acidic more abundant in young women and at mid-menstrual cycle, while more acidic isoforms are more abundant in older women and in men.[ed Note hFSH less in older women- implications for age & FSH]

IVFD Uterine Selection of Human Embryos at Implantation
Human embryos frequently harbor large-scale complex chromosomal errors that impede normal development. Affected embryos may fail to implant although many first breach the endometrial epithelium and embed in the decidualizing stroma before being rejected via mechanisms that are poorly understood. Here we show that developmentally impaired human embryos elicit an endoplasmic stress response in human decidual cells.

IVFD Clonal culturing of human embryonic stem cells on laminin-521/E-cadherin matrix in defined and xeno-free environment
The LN-521/E-cadherin matrix allows hES cell line derivation from blastocyst inner cell mass and single blastomere cells without a need to destroy the embryo. This method can facilitate the generation of hES cell lines for development of different cell types for regenerative medicine purposes. {will labs be now asked to store one blastomeres for future stem cells? ed)

IVFD Is global access to infertility care realistic? The Walking Egg Project
From the start, the Walking Egg Project has approached this problem in a multidisciplinary and global manner. It gathers medical, social, ethical, epidemiological, juridical and economic scientists to discuss and work together towards its goal. The final objective of the Walking Egg Project is the implementation of infertility services in many developing countries, preferably integrated in existing family planning and mother care services.

IVFD Does cigarette smoking really have detrimental effects on outcomes of IVF?
Cigarette smoking among men did not have a significant negative effect on outcomes of IVF whether their partners were smokers or nonsmokers. Regression analysis did not give any significant difference when male and/or female smoking status was analyzed for fertilization rates, transferred embryo qualities and clinical pregnancy rates.

IVFD Luteinizing hormone and human chorionic gonadotropin: Origins of difference [Open Access]
Although they bind to a common receptor, emerging evidence suggests that LH and hCG have disparate effects on downstream signaling cascades. Increased understanding of the inherent differences between LH and hCG will foster more effective diagnostic and prognostic assays for use in a variety of clinical contexts and support the individualization of treatment strategies for conditions such as infertility.

IVFD One of the major genes responsible for female differentiation discovered
Researchers have just uncovered one of the major genes responsible for female differentiation: FOXL2. Not only does this gene activate differentiation in the ovary, but it also blocks the expression of male genes within the developing ovary. These results will help further understanding with regards to certain cases of infertility in female livestock and women.

IVFD First live births with a novel simplified IVF procedure
A recent prospective study comparing conventional IVF with a novel simplified laboratory method of culturing embryos suggested that fertilization and implantation rates were similar for the simplified system when compared with those reported by conventional IVF programs. Sixteen healthy babies have already been born with this new method. According to the results of this study, IVF may be offered at a more reasonable price and made available to a

IVFD New stem cell research removes reliance on human and animal cells
A new study, published today in the journal Applied Materials & Interfaces, has found a new method for growing human embryonic stem cells, that doesn't rely on supporting human or animal cells. -have developed a scaffold of carbon nanotubes upon which human stem cells can be grown into a variety of tissues. These new building blocks mimic the surface of the body's natural support cells and act as scaffolding for stem cells to grow on

IVFD New method increases supply of embryonic stem cells
A new method allows for large-scale generation of human embryonic stem cells of high clinical quality. It also allows for production of such cells without destroying any human embryos. The discovery is a big step forward for stem cell research and for the high hopes for replacing damaged cells and thereby curing serious illnesses such as diabetes and Parkinson's disease. IVFD Having a baby after fertility issues improves couples' chances of staying together
New research reveals that women who have a child after experiencing fertility problems are more likely to remain with their partner following infertility evaluations. The findings indicate that after 12 years of follow-up, nearly 27% of women were no longer living with the partner, which they had at the time of fertility evaluation, if they did not have a child.

IVFD Cell cycle speed is key to making aging cells young again
Researchers identified a major obstacle to converting cells back to their youthful state - the speed of the cell cycle, or the time required for a cell to divide. When the cell cycle accelerates to a certain speed, the barriers that keep a cell's fate on one path diminish. In such a state, cells are easily persuaded to change their identity and become pluripotent, or capable of becoming multiple cell types. [Ed Implications for IVF embryos?]

IVFD Stem cells: Five years ago, this would have been impossible
A recent New York Times article sheds light on the issue of discarding embryos that carry gene mutations. Families such as the one featured in the story who opt for in-vitro fertilization and preimplantation genetic diagnosis, and have embryos that they will not use due to genetic issues, are encouraged to donate them to the MStem Cell laboratory instead of discarding them.

IVFD Ethics Questions Arise as Genetic Testing of Embryos Increases
-Genetic testing of embryos has been around for more than a decade, but its use has soared in recent years as methods have improved and more disease-causing genes have been discovered. The in vitro fertilization and testing are expensive — typically about $20,000 — but they make it possible for couples to ensure that their children will not inherit a faulty gene and to avoid the difficult choice of whether to abort a pregnancy if testing of a fet
