Capacitation and Ca2+ influx in spermatozoa: role of CNG channels and protein kinase G
This work suggests that the downstream cGMP pathway is required in mammalian sperm capacitation and the mechanisms involved include CNG channels and PKG, highlighting these molecules as important therapeutic targets for infertility treatments or to develop new male contraceptives.
Neonatal outcomes among singleton births after blastocyst versus cleavage stage embryo transfer: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Risk of PTB in IVF singleton pregnancies is significantly higher following blastocyst transfer compared with cleavage stage transfer. Risk of congenital anomalies may also be higher but further studies are needed to confirm this finding and to identify reasons for such outcomes.
The predictive accuracy of anti-Müllerian hormone for live birth after assisted conception: a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature
CONCLUSIONS AMH, independently of age, has some association with predicting live birth after assisted conception and may be helpful when counselling couples before undergoing fertility treatment. However, its predictive accuracy is poor.
Human semen cryopreservation: a sperm DNA fragmentation study with alkaline and neutral Comet assay
Results support previous reports that oxidative stress is the major effector in DNA damage during sample cryopreservation, as, on one hand, ssSDF has previously been related to oxidative damage and, on the other hand, we have not found any effect on dsSDF. Therefore, there might be a slight risk of decreased fertility after using a freezed sample, but no evidence for increased miscarriage risk from cryopreserved spermatozoa should be expected.
Outcome of microdissection TESE compared with conventional TESE in non-obstructive azoospermia: a systematic review
Clinical randomized studies comparing microTESE with conventional TESE in NOA are still lacking to date. Pseudo-randomized prospective data, however, show more favourable sperm retrieval in NOA for microTESE, especially in histological patterns of patchy spermatogenesis such as Sertoli cell only syndrome. However, in patients with uniform histological patterns such as maturation arrest outcome of microTESE seems less favourable.
Should repeated TESE be performed following a failed TESE in men with Klinefelter Syndrome?
The main goal of this study was to evaluate the success rate of repeated Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE) in Klinefelter Syndrome (KS). Three of the 18 patients who underwent repeated micro TESE, had successful sperm retrieval and repeated TESE failed in 15 patients. Three patients with successful sperm retrieval underwent intracytoplasmic sperm injection using retrieved testicular spermatozoa. Two embryos for each patient which were determine
Embryology training for Reproductive Endocrine fellows in the clinical human embryology laboratory
When fellows are trained to perform embryology procedures as an integral part of their fellowship curricula, laboratory efficiencies and clinical outcomes are fully maintained. This experience provides valuable insight into the ART process critical to this subspecialty. It also empowers fellows to fully participate in research relating to the viability of gamete and embryos and optimization of the clinical ART laboratory.
Improvement of mouse embryo quality by myo-inositol supplementation of IVF media
Conclusion. The presence of myoIns resulted in both an increase in proliferation activity and developmental rate of in vitro cultured early mouse embryos, representing a substantial improvement of culture conditions. These data may identify myoIns as an important supplement for human embryo preimplantation culture.
The danger of ignoring pregnancy and delivery rates in ART
Belgium is probably the first country where colleagues and government made, what we consider a Faustian bargain, by mandating single embryo transfer (SET) for large percentages of infertile women undergoing ART in return for government coverage of ART expenses - The effort to present the Belgian experience as a successful example of reducing multiple pregnancies, however, mandates a response.
IVF culture medium affects post-natal weight in humans during the first 2 years of life
The effect of culture medium during the first few days after fertilization on prenatal growth and birthweight persists during the first 2 years of life. This suggests that the human embryo is sensitive to its very early environment, and that the culture medium used in IVF may have lasting consequences. Further monitoring of the long-term growth, development and health of IVF children is therefore warranted.
Gamete donors' expectations and experiences of contact with their donor offspring
Anonymous donors' needs and desires are not homogeneous: policy and practice should be sensitive and responsive to a wide range of circumstances and preferences. Decisions made to restrict or facilitate contact or the exchange of information have ramifications for donors as well as for donor-conceived people.
Does anonymous sperm donation increase the risk for unions between relatives and the incidence of autosomal recessive diseases due to consanguinity?
Anonymous AID would therefore be responsible for 0.46% of consanguineous births and for 0.01% of recessive diseases. Therefore, the effect of anonymous AID on half-sibling unions, consanguinity and recessive disease incidence can be regarded as marginal.
Chromothripsis: how does such a catastrophic event impact human reproduction?
The recent discovery of a new kind of massive chromosomal rearrangement, baptized chromothripsis (chromo for chromosomes, thripsis for shattering into pieces), greatly modifies our understanding of molecular mechanisms implicated in the repair of DNA damage and the genesis of complex chromosomal rearrangements. Initially described in cancers, and then in constitutional rearrangements, chromothripsis is characterized by the shattering of one (or a
The IVF question: What to do with leftover embryos?
In vitro involves creating an embryo in a medical laboratory using eggs harvested from the intended mother (or a donor) and sperm collected from the intended father (or a donor). After a period of incubation, the embryo is transferred into the woman’s uterus and the wait for implantation – and hopefully, a positive pregnancy test! – begins. Any extra embryos are frozen in storage.
Customs new rules to allow import of frozen embryos
Resolution of this issue will reduce delays for couples seeking to undergo IVF procedure. The import of human embryos for artificial reproduction will no longer require special permission, according to the Customs department.
This was announced recently in notifications by the Central Board of Excise and Customs and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade that clears some grey areas in the rules.
More children in America have been born via in vitro fertilization than ever before, according to a new report from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. According to the report, IVF procedures hit an all-time high in 2012 with 165,172.
Pregnancy study for overweight women leads to fewer high birth weight babies
The world's biggest study offering healthy eating and exercise advice to pregnant women who are overweight or obese has shown a significant reduction in the number of babies born over 4kg (8.8 pounds) in weight.
The secret of fertile sperm: Novel diagnostic tests and treatments for male infertility?
To better understand the causes of male infertility, scientists are exploring the factors, both physiological and biochemical, that differentiate fertile sperm from infertile sperm. Scientists have characterized proteins known as ion channels, which are crucial for sperm fertility and expressed within a sperm cell's plasma membrane.
First private IVF egg bank opens today: Clinic pays donors up to £750 to help women who have put off motherhood
Britain's first human egg bank launches today to help growing numbers of women who delay motherhood. Donors will be paid up to £750 for their eggs which will be given to patients who are unable to produce healthy ones of their own. The clinic behind the scheme says it is a practical way of plugging the shortage of donors and helping patients achieve their dream of having a family.

IVF offspring have same quality of life as naturally conceived peers, study shows
ADULTS conceived through IVF turn out as mentally and physically healthy, and enjoy a similar quality of life and educational standards, as their naturally conceived peers. But the world’s largest study into the effects of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in young adults has found that IVF-conceived offspring have higher rates of asthma, hay fever and hospitalisation in their first 18 years of life.
