Impaired sperm chromatin integrity in obese mice [ed. ?should DNA Fragmentation needs to be viewed wrt male BMI]
In conclusion, a clear positive correlation between body mass index and sperm DNA fragmentation was found in two mouse models of obesity. However, the variability in sperm DNA fragmentation within the two groups of obese animals was high. The observed changes in the transcript level of the marker genes suggest that there may be a local response in testicular cells to the HFD regimen with a potential impact on intratesticular signalling and sperma
Maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index and pubertal development among sons
After excluding sons of underweight mothers in a subanalysis, we observed an inverse trend between maternal pre-pregnancy BMI and age at regular shaving, acne and first nocturnal emission. In conclusion, maternal pre-pregnant obesity may be related to earlier timing of pubertal milestones among sons. More research, preferably based on prospectively collected information about pubertal development, is needed to draw firm conclusions.
Regulation of acrosome reaction by Liprin α:3, LAR and its ligands in mouse spermatozoa
On the basis of these data, we speculate that in presence of ligands or wedge peptide, LAR undergoes dimerization leading to inhibition of phosphatase activity and increase in AR. The presence of one of the ligands Syndecan-1 on cumulus cells led us to hypothesize that it is Syndecan which induces AR in vivo and thus another site of AR could lie in cumulus.
Intratesticular testosterone is increased in men with Klinefelter syndrome and may not be released into the bloodstream owing to altered testicular va
In conclusion, testicular T production does not seem to be impaired in men with KS. On the contrary, ITT concentrations are increased, but not because of increased SHBG activity. The data from the mouse model let us speculate that a reduced vascular bed might be involved in lower release of T into the bloodstream.
Risk of stillbirth and infant deaths after assisted reproductive technology: a Nordic study from the CoNARTaS† group
The risk of stillbirth in ART versus SC singletons was only increased for very early gestational ages (before 28 weeks). This might indicate that the current clinical management of ART pregnancies is sufficient regarding prevention of stillbirth during the third trimester.
Parental age at delivery and a man's semen quality
The current study found no link between parental age and a son's semen quality, suggesting other factors may explain recent impairments in men's reproductive health.
Correlation between standard blastocyst morphology, euploidy and implantation: an observational study in two centers involving 956 screened blastocyst
This study provides knowledge for a better laboratory and clinical management of blastocyst stage PGS cycles suggesting that the commonly used parameters of blastocyst evaluation are not good enough indicators to improve the selection among euploid embryos.
Automated embryo stage classification in time-lapse microscopy video of early human embryo development.
The accurate and automated measuring of durations of certain human embryo stages is important to assess embryo viability and predict its clinical outcomes in in vitro fertilization (IVF). In this work, we present a multi-level embryo stage classification method to identify the number of cells at every time point of a time-lapse microscopy video of early human embryo development. The proposed method employs a rich set of hand-crafted and automatic
SART Releases New Annual Report on In Vitro Fertilization Procedures
The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) has released its 2012 report on assisted reproductive technologies in the United States. SART’s 379 member clinics performed 165,172 cycles, or procedures involving IVF, in 2012. These procedures resulted in the birth of 61,740 babies, an increase of more than 2000 infants from 2011. There were an estimated 3.9 million babies born in the US in 2012, thus IVF babies now constitute over 1.5%
Some of the most unsettling evidence for uncertainty in semen analysis is demonstrated by the EQA (External Quality Assessment) data provided by the returns from UKNEQAS (UK National External Quality Assurance Scheme). Unfortunately almost every return from all participants demonstrates wide variation between centres with many laboratories failing to come close to achieving the target value.
It is clear that the target value is affected by bot
Uncertainty in relation to laboratory testing simply means the existence of doubt or level of error associated with a particular measurement. In general, if the evidence relating any given semen parameter with pregnancy outcome is weaker or controversial then it is likely that: either the study design was not particularly robust or the testing method used to measure that particular semen parameter is subject to a higher level of uncertainty
How the creation of babies using sperm and eggs from three people will be regulated in the UK has been announced. The draft rules will be reviewed as part of a public consultation and could come into force by the end of 2014. Doctors say three-person IVF could eliminate debilitating and potentially fatal diseases that are passed from mother to child.
Separated by Birth and Visa Laws, Brother and Sister Languish On Opposite Shores
It’s a story of pathos that involves two siblings separated by oceans, fractious parents and complicated visa laws. Ten-year-old Vedant and his five-year-old sibling Medhavi, born to an Indian origin American citizen, have never met. They only speak to each other on Skype and have never done the ordinary things brothers and sisters do—play, quarrel, hug or have adventures together. Every March, Medhavi ties a rakhi on Vedant and showers kisses on
‘ 15 pc couples in country turn infertile due to change in life style’
About 15 percent couples in our country are unable to have a baby naturally and they are dependent on In- vitro Fertilisation ( IVF). The cases of infertility and impotence have been increasing drastically, thanks to the pressure of unrealistic goals in corporate field and change on life style,” infertility specialist Dr Gajendra Tomar said.

Older first-time mums are big business for Virtus.
Fears among older first time mothers that their age could lead to babies born with conditions caused by genetic abnormalities like Down Syndrome are driving big business at Virtus Health. Chief executive Sue Channon said the average age of the women who use the company’s IVF services is 37 years, so the babies they help to create are “very precious”. “We know that patients in the older age group are more susceptible to [having babies with] things
Use of acetaminophen during pregnancy linked to ADHD in children, researchers say
[The report] show that taking acetaminophen during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk in children of attention-deficity/hyperactivity disorder and hyperkinetic disorder. The data raises the question of whether the drug should be considered safe for use by pregnant women. [ed part of the pregnancy advice to IVF patients]
AUSTRALIA'S largest medical centre operator, Primary Health Care, is preparing to break into the $500 million-plus fertility services market, with plans to dramatically undercut the existing operators on price. The strategy, which was flagged by Primary managing director Edmund Bateman at several investor briefings following the company's recent interim results, initially would involve recruiting several fertility specialists to join the company'
And Surrogacy Makes 3 - In New York, a Push for Compensated Surrogacy
Such is the world of gestational surrogacy, in which a woman is paid to go through the pregnancy and birth of a child who is not genetically related to her and then promises to give that child away. To anyone who has had a baby, or known someone who has, the couple’s tireless zest for reciting their daughter’s birth story will bring a knowing smile, maybe a jaded shrug. But for Mr. Sigal and Mr. Hoylman, two gay men, the birth narrative carries w
