Effects of transdermal testosterone in poor responders undergoing IVF: systematic review and meta-analysis
In conclusion, transdermal testosterone significantly increases live birth and reduces the doses of FSH required. These findings support the theoretical synergistic role of androgens and FSH on folliculogenesis. The present data should be interpreted with caution because of the small number of trials and clinical heterogeneity. The identification of poor responders that could especially benefit from testosterone treatment should be addressed in f
Previous abortion is a positive predictor for ongoing pregnancy in the next cycle in women with repeated IVF failures
In conclusion, BP and/or SA in a previous cycle appears to be a positive marker for success in subsequent cycles in patients with repeated IVF failures. These results should be further investigated in this challenging group of patients.
Monozygotic multiple pregnancies following IVF: a case report series of rare experience
The exact mechanism behind this increased frequency remains uncertain. Possible explanations associated with fertility treatments include alterations of the zona pellucida, transfers at the blastocyst stage, prolonged culture, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, ovarian stimulation and maternal age. Assisted reproduction treatment appears to increase monozygotic pregnancies: however, the rate is still low and therefore it is difficult to exactly c
Timing of cell division in human cleavage-stage embryos is linked with blastocyst formation and quality
It is concluded that the kinetics of early embryo development and the potential for human embryos to develop to the blastocyst stage on day 5 are closely related and that time-lapse-based evaluation of the exact timing of early events in embryo development is a promising tool for the prediction of blastocyst formation and quality according to the proposed model.
Absolute asthenozoospermia and ICSI: what are the options?
Absolute immotile spermatozoa is one of the most important causes of reduced fertilization and pregnancy rates after ICSI and different techniques are used to improve ICSI outcomes. However, it still remains unclear which is the best technique to improve the pregnancy outcomes in these couples.
Gamete competence assessment by polarizing optics in assisted reproduction
Most studies show that polarization microscopy may help us to further increase our knowledge on gametes and meiosis. Whether certain applications such as spindle or zona imaging may lead to an increase in IVF success is unclear at present.
Chromosomal mosaicism in human preimplantation embryos: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS Diploid–aneuploid mosaicism is by far the most common chromosomal constitution in spare human preimplantation embryos after IVF. This undermines the reliable determination of the ploidy status of a cleavage-stage embryo based on the analysis of a single cell. Future research should determine the origin and developmental potential of mosaic embryos.
Maternal smoking in pregnancy and birth defects: a systematic review based on 173 687 malformed cases and 11.7 million controls
CONCLUSIONS Birth defects that are positively associated with maternal smoking should now be included in public health educational materials to encourage more women to quit before or during pregnancy.
Defining infertility—a systematic review of prevalence studies
CONCLUSIONS There is a need for an agreed definition for infertility. We suggest a clinically relevant definition based on the duration of trying for pregnancy coupled with female age.
IVF versus ICSI for the fertilization of in-vitro matured human oocytes
Sibling oocytes were inseminated by 50% IVF and 50% ICSI. There was no significant difference in fertilization, useable or total blastocyst development between the two insemination technique groups. - This research has shown IVF to be a legitimate fertilization technique for IVM oocytes in PCOS patients and provides a greater awareness of the use of a fertilization method previously not utilized with IVM.
History of endometriosis may adversely affect the outcome in menopausal recipients of sibling oocytes
The implantation and pregnancy rates were significantly lower in the endometriosis group compared with the control group (23.81% versus 31.48%, P = 0.019: 45.00% versus 58.33%, P = 0.039, respectively). In oocyte donation cycles, a recipient’s history of endometriosis might have a negative impact on implantation, pregnancy and live birth rates, even in menopausal women.
Brain Study Reveals the Roots of Chocolate Temptations
Researchers have new evidence in rats to explain how it is that chocolate candies can be so completely irresistible. The urge to overeat such deliciously sweet and fatty treats traces to an unexpected part of the brain and its production of a natural, opium-like chemical, according to a report published online on September 20th in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication
Epigenetics: Mother's Nutrition - Before Pregnancy - May Alter Function of Her Children's Genes
According to a new research report published online in The FASEB Journal, what a group of female mice ate - before pregnancy - chemically altered their DNA and these changes were passed to her offspring. These DNA alterations, called "epigenetic" changes, drastically affected the pups' metabolism of many essential fatty acids.
Many consider the genetic screening and selection of embryos a symbol of great progress in medicine. Others are horrified by what these technologies could mean for human diversity. It can be easy to discuss this topic in black and white terms, but if you were given the choice, would you not go ahead with a pregnancy if a genetic marker for a disease or cancer was found? And what else would you select for, if you could? Eye colour? Height? IQ?
'Three people, one baby' public consultation begins
A public consultation has been launched to discuss the ethics of using three people to create one baby. The technique could be used to prevent debilitating and fatal "mitochondrial" diseases, which are passed down only from mother to child. However, the resulting baby would contain genetic information from three people - two parents and a donor woman
Survey:Blastocyst Vitrification [This link may be from a sponsor]
Comment:Many clinics routinely vitrify blastocysts but there is little information on how often the cavity is collapsed before vitrification and hatched after warming. This quick survey seeks to find out how common these techniques are.
CDP011-Osmolality of culture media [This link may be from a sponsor]
Osmolality is a measure of the pressure exerted by dissolved substances in a solution. Cells in solutions like the fluid of their in vivo environment or in culture media are subject to osmotic pressure. Cells, including embryos, control their sizes by adjusting their intracellular osmotic pressure. This module describes the importance of osmolality and cell volume regulation in embryo culture and viability. On completion, there should be an appre
