Total fertilization failure in intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection cycles – classification and management.
In this retrospective cohort study we intended to propose a classification and preliminary management strategy for couples exhibiting total fertilization failure (TFF) in intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles. - We conclude that initial and repeated TFF hints at severe gamete defects for which only donor gametes may prove successful while sporadic TFF events could simply imply a technical modifiable condition.
Adding serum estradiol measurements to ultrasound monitoring does not change the yield of mature oocytes in IVF/ICSI.
. After adjustment for age, gravidity, antagonist protocol, AMH and infertility diagnosis, the average difference in number of mature oocytes between the UHM group and the UM group was −:0.4 (95% CI: −:1.7 to 1.0), which met our definition of clinical equivalence (95% CI for the adjusted mean difference between −:2 and 2). Larger studies are still needed to evaluate the differences in the live birth rates per cycle and to further c
Role of Semen in Modulating the Female Genital Tract Microenvironment – Implications for HIV Transmission [Free]
Semen deposition results in modulated immunity and an inflammatory response of the genital mucosa, which promotes conditions facilitating conception and pregnancy. These semen-induced alterations in the female reproductive tract can also have implications for the sexual transmission of viral infections such as HIV-1. Semen is not only a vector for HIV-1 but also a carrier for pro- and antiviral factors. Semen induces significant mucosal changes u
The Role of Inflammation for a Successful Implantation
These observations suggest that mechanical injury of the endometrium may enhance uterine receptivity by provoking the immune system to generate an inflammatory reaction. In strong support of this idea, we recently found that dendritic cells (DCs), an important cellular component of the innate immune system, play a critical role in successful implantation in a mouse model. In this review, we discuss the hypothesis that the injury-derived inflammat
Sexual function dramatically improves in women following bariatric surgery
The first study to look extensively at sexual function in women who underwent bariatric surgery found that significant improvements in overall sexual function, most reproductive hormones and in psychological status were maintained over two years following surgery. Women reporting the poorest quality of sexual function prior to surgery saw the most dramatic improvements one year after surgery, on par with women who reported the highest quality of
The association between embryo quality and perinatal outcome of singletons born after single embryo transfers: a pilot study
There was a higher clinical pregnancy rate (41.5%) and live birth rate (32.3%) in the good quality embryo transfer group compared with that in the poor quality transfer group (19.2 and 15.5%, respectively: P < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in the miscarriage rate between the transfers of a single good or poor quality embryo. Multivariable logistic regression analyses for pregnancy complications revealed no increased risk of matern
Major congenital anomalies in children born after frozen embryo transfer: a cohort study 1995–2006
Perinatal outcomes of FET children, including the risks for CAs, are good and comparable with outcomes of other ART children indicating that slow freezing is a safe method to use during ART treatments.
The construction of an interfacial valve-based microfluidic chip for thermotaxis evaluation of human sperm
Thermotaxis has been demonstrated to be an important criterion for sperm evaluation, yet clinical assessment of thermotaxis capacity is currently lacking. In this article, the on-chip thermotaxis evaluation of human sperm is presented for the first time using an interfacial valve-facilitated microfluidic device. The temperature gradient was established and accurately controlled by an external temperature gradient control system. The temperature g
Sugar-sweetened beverage intake in relation to semen quality and reproductive hormone levels in young men
SSB intake was inversely related to progressive sperm motility. Men in the highest quartile of SSB intake (≥:1.3 serving/day) had 9.8 (95% CI: 1.9,17.8) percentage units lower progressive sperm motility than men in the lowest quartile of intake (<0.2 serving/day) (P, trend = 0.03). This association was stronger among lean men (P, trend = 0.005) but absent among overweight or obese men (P, trend = 0.98). SSB intake was unrelated to other seme
Epigenetic status in the offspring of spontaneous and assisted conception
The results of this study provide support for a role for epigenetics, and imprinting in particular, in fertility. The specific changes point to possible long-term consequences of fertility treatment for the health and fertility of future generations.
Intrauterine administration of recombinant human chorionic gonadotropin before embryo transfer on outcome of in vitro fertilization/ intracytoplasmic
Patients who received intrauterine rhCG before ET had significantly higher implantation (36.9% vs. 22.4%: p=0.035), clinical pregnancy rates (34.5% vs. 20.4%: p=0.044) and ongoing pregnancy rate (32.1% vs. 18.4%: p=0.032) when compared to those who received placebo. The abortion (2.4% vs. 2.0%: p=0.929) and ectopic pregnancy rates (1.2% vs. 1.0%: p=0.976) were comparable between groups of rhCG and placebo, respectively. Conclusion: Intrauterine in
Randomised clinical trial comparing elective single-embryo transfer followed by single-embryo cryotransfer versus double embryo transfer
In the intention-to-treat analysis, the cumulative live birth delivery rate in the eSET group was similar to the results obtained for the DET group (45.2% vs. 41.8%: p := :0.60). The rate of multiple gestation was significantly lower in the eSET group than in the DET group (0% vs. 26.4%: p :< :0.05). The findings obtained in the per-protocol analysis were similar to those obtained in the intention-to-treat analysis. The per-pr
Fertility pioneer Lord Winston has warned the wealthy could pay to have designer babies as a result of breakthroughs in IVF, writes The Daily Mail.
Fertility guru's IVF warning: Rich could pay to have brighter babies, says Lord Winston. The fertility pioneer said that he feared a time when the rich could alter the appearance and ability of children by tinkering with their genes. And he claimed a ‘toxic’ climate had been created by the desperation of childless couples and the pace of scientific developments in the booming IVF industry
IV hormone infusion could treat common cause of infertility in women
Researchers have succeeded in restoring hormones essential for fertility that are commonly lost in women who exercise intensively, according to research. Fertility depends on a range of reproductive hormones. In females, one of these, called luteinising hormone is released from the brain in short bursts every 1-2 hours. When women undergo strict exercise regimes and restrict their calorific intake, energy is diverted away from maintaining their r
French judge blocks lesbian couple's adoption of baby conceived via IVF
A French court has ruled that a woman may not adopt a child her partner conceived using fertility treatment abroad. The decision has sparked outrage from equal rights activists. Despite same-sex marriage being made legal in France last year, it remains against the law for same-sex couples to receive assisted conception. The women, who are now married, had travelled to Belgium where one of them conceived and later gave birth to their son, now four
China's oldest mother: Woman of 64 defies one-child policy with IVF twins to overcome loneliness after her first daughter died
Read more: http://ww
It's rare enough to fall pregnant aged 64... for it to be twins is even rarer. And in China it is even rarer still to be allowed to keep your twins thanks to a one-child policy that's been in force since the 1970s.
But Sheng Hailin managed to achieve all three when she became China's oldest mother four years ago giving birth to daughters Zhizhi and Huihui aged 60. Sheng and her husband decided that she wanted to become a mother again after her
Lord Winston says IVF could 'threaten our humanity'
The advancement of IVF techniques could 'threaten our humanity' if it enables the rich to pay for designer babies, said Professor Lord Robert Winston, a pioneer of the fertility treatment.
