Comment:FertAid has released a beta version of a new IVF Laboratory logbook for CV or accreditation. Some key links to male infertility (semen analysis) and male mortality and relation of vacuoles and clinical outcome. An example of the conservative nature of many countries to IVF, Sweden is only now considering treatment for single women. Finally some links to articles on how the egg removes the sperm mitochondria. Please complete the 2014 laboratory census.

Semen quality, infertility and mortality in the USA.
While adjusting for current health status attenuated the association between semen parameters and mortality, men with two or more abnormal semen parameters still had a 2.3-fold higher risk of death compared with men with normal semen (95% CI 1.12–4.65).-Men with impaired semen parameters have an increased mortality rate in the years following an infertility evaluation suggesting semen quality may provide a marker of health.
The rate of high ovarian response in women identified at risk by a high serum AMH level is influenced by the type of gonadotropin. [OPEN ACCESS]
. In both protocols, HP-hMG stimulation in women in the high AMH category was associated with a significantly lower occurrence of high response (≥::15 oocytes retrieved) than rFSH stimulation: 33% versus 51% (p ::= ::0.025) and 31% versus 49% (p ::= ::0.015) in the long agonist and antagonist protocol, respectively. In the potential high-responder women, trends for improved live birth rate were observed with HP-hMG compar
Live birth after frozen-thawed oocytes matured in vitro in a PCOS patient: a model for improving implantation rates in IVM cycles and objectively asse
The present case demonstrates that the transfer of frozen-thawed IVM oocytes during an artificial cycle in PCOS patients is feasible and leads to pregnancy and live birth. This strategy may also be an interesting option to objectively assess the developmental potential of these oocytes after freezing and thawing, which is a major concern for physicians who include the IVM approach in their fertility preservation program.
Live birth from a 46-year-old using fresh autologous oocytes through in vitro fertilization
A 46-year-old with antimullerian hormone (AMH) level less than 0.16 conceived through IVF using autologous oocytes. A total of seven oocytes were retrieved, from which four embryos were transferred at the cleavage stage, resulting in a pregnancy and delivery of a healthy male infant weighing 1,580 g at 31 and 3/7 weeks' estimated gestational age.
Clinical and Structural Features of Sperm Head Vacuoles in Men Included in the In Vitro Fertilization Programme
he sperm head vacuoles were related to impaired semen quality (sperm concentration, motility, and morphology) but were not influenced by male factors (semen volume, height, age, weight, or body mass index). Moreover, sperm head vacuoles were related to impaired fertilization rate merely after classical in vitro fertilization (IVF), while there was no relation to pregnancy.
Parenting Style of Women Who Conceived Using In Vitro Fertilization: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions/Implications for Practice: Women who conceive using IVF have slightly but still significantly greater controlling parenting behaviors than women who conceive naturally. The results of this study may help professionals to better understand the parenting style of IVF women and develop appropriate interventions to reduce parenting anxiety and promote the mental health of IVF women.
Paternal Mitochondrial Destruction after Fertilization Is Mediated by a Common Endocytic and Autophagic Pathway in Drosophila
We demonstrate that the sperm mitochondrial derivative (MD) is rapidly eliminated in a stereotypical process dubbed paternal mitochondrial destruction (PMD). PMD is initiated by a network of vesicles resembling multivesicular bodies and displaying common features of the endocytic and autophagic pathways. These vesicles associate with the sperm tail and mediate the disintegration of its plasma membrane. Subsequently, the MD separates from the axo
Direct action of endocrine disrupting chemicals on human sperm
Synthetic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), omnipresent in food, household, and personal care products, have been implicated in adverse trends in human reproduction, including infertility and increasing demand for assisted reproduction.
Bat poo may have preserved the world's oldest sperm, which has been found at a fossil site in north-western Queensland, say researchers. The discovery of giant sperm along with other internal reproductive organs in exceptionally well-preserved 17-million year old fossil ostracods is reported today in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B
Analyzing sperm cells to learn about animal infidelity, evolution
The analyzing of sperm cells to learn more about bird evolution and behavior is a new area of research. "To understand sexual infidelity in species, interpreting DNA is not enough. We also need to look at the shape and behavior of the sperm cells. Sperm research has opened up a completely new world to us," says one researcher.
Endocrine disruptors impair human sperm function, research finds
A plethora of endocrine-disrupting chemicals interfere with human sperm function in a way that may have a negative impact on fertilization, according to new research. The work suggests that endocrine disruptors may contribute to widespread fertility problems in the Western world in a way that hitherto has not been recognized.
Global In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Market (Instruments, Reagents and Media, Technology, Geography) - Size, Share, Trends, Opportunities, Global Deman
In-vitro fertilization is a type of assisted reproductive technology that helps women in conceiving. The global IVF market was valued at $9.3 billion in 2012 and is expected to grow up to $21.6 billion by 2020. Delayed pregnancy in women is one of the major driving factors of the IVF market, as the chances of conceiving lowers with age.
Derbyshire sisters Rose and Daisy picked as embryos to beat killer disease
TWO young sisters were “picked” in a laboratory to beat a killer disease that runs in their family. Three-year-old Rose Mulchinock and baby Daisy, five months, were born from embryos screened by fertility doctors to ensure they would not suffer from Huntington’s Disease.
What are the implications of so many first time moms after 35?
Data just released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) shows that birth rates continue to rise for those women becoming first-time mothers when over 35. The number for 2012 was much higher than it was for the 1970s.
Inheriting Mitochondria: Where does your father's go?
While it's common knowledge that all organisms inherit their mitochondria - the cell's "power plants" - from their mothers, it hasn't been clear what happens to all the father's mitochondria. Surprisingly, how - and why - paternal mitochondria are prevented from getting passed on to their offspring after fertilization is still shrouded in mystery: the only thing that's certain is that there must be a compelling reason, seeing as this phenomenon h
Men who are infertile because of defects in their semen appear to be at increased risk of dying sooner than men with normal semen, according to a study. Men with two or more abnormalities in their semen were more than twice as likely to die over a roughly eight-year period as men who had normal semen, the study found.
Single women in Sweden should no longer need to travel abroad for in vitro fertilisation (IVF), a new inquiry has proposed. If applied, single women would have the same reproductive rights as women in a relationship.
Although data on ART treatments have been collected for many years, the same questions about what to record arise each time a new register is established. The aim of this site is to provide information and help on how to set up a register that collects appropriate data from the outset. The expectation is that accurate statistical data collected by clinics will supply data to national, regional and international organizations for publication. This
Continuous Professional Development Modules-Sample Identification-Dr Steve Fleming
This review will consider the rationale for witnessing, the mode of operation of the main witnessing systems currently available, and the relative strengths and weaknesses of witnessing systems depending upon the manner in which they are applied.
Staff Logbook. FertAid has developed an online activities logbook for all IVF personnel. There is a list of common procedures available but you are able to create a personalized activity list. You may log the number of cases each quarter and after authorization by your supervisor may be used for certification or competency by your clinic. There is no cost for this module.
FertAid has released the 2014 laboratory census. The aim is to provide clinics with a sense of what others are doing and how their activity compares to others.
