Rheotaxis facilitates upstream navigation of mammalian sperm cells
We report the first quantitative study of mammalian sperm rheotaxis, using microfluidic devices to investigate systematically swimming of human and bull sperm over a range of physiologically relevant shear rates and viscosities. Our measurements show that the interplay of fluid shear, steric surface-interactions, and chirality of the flagellar beat leads to stable upstream spiralling motion of sperm cells, thus providing a generic and robust rect
Clinical rationale for cryopreservation of entire embryo cohorts in lieu of fresh transfer
There have been reports of greater implantation and pregnancy rates with FET than with fresh autologous embryo transfer, suggesting superior endometrial receptivity in the absence of ovarian stimulation. As cryo-technology evolves, there is potential for further increase in FET success rates, but for now it may be best to follow an individualized approach, balancing fresh transfer and embryo cohort cryopreservation options while considering patie
Lipid Concentrations and Couple Fecundity: The LIFE Study
Our results suggest that serum free cholesterol concentrations in both men and women have an effect on TTP, highlighting the importance of cholesterol and lipid homeostasis for male and female fecundity.
We found an inverse association between perceived stress score and sperm concentration, motility in covariate-adjusted linear regression analyses. Men who experienced two or more stressful life events in the past year compared with no stressful events had a lower percentage of motile sperm and a lower percentage of morphologically normal sperm but a similar sperm concentration. Job strain was not associated with semen parameters.
Oocyte and sperm donors' opinions on the acceptable number of offspring
Oocyte donors have more restrictive opinions compared with sperm donors on the acceptable number of offspring from one donor. Donors perform a very humanitarian and societal act when donating their gametes. In the ambition to have safe and trustworthy clinics we need to have well known regulations to be able to recruit donors in the future.
Sperm, egg donors comfortable assisting with betweeen one and 10 childen, Swedish study finds
Between one and ten children: that is what the majority of Swedish egg and sperm donors think is an acceptable level for their assistance to childless couples. Female donors are more restrictive than male donors, according to a study. The study, the first of its kind, included 119 sperm donors and 181 egg donors. Prior to their first donation they had to complete a questionnaire that was followed up five to eight years later.
Psychological stress is harmful to sperm and semen quality, affecting its concentration, appearance, and ability to fertilize an egg, according to a study. It is not fully understood how stress affects semen quality. It may trigger the release of steroid hormones called glucocorticoids, which in turn could blunt levels of testosterone and sperm production. Another possibility is oxidative stress, which has been shown to affect semen quality and f
Fatherless pregnancies happen in nature more than we thought, says Frank Swain, so what’s stopping human beings from doing the same?-Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman, as the singer Tammy Wynette famously said. As if doing the reproductive heavy lifting wasn’t bad enough, nature played a cosmic prank in making women need men to complete the task, and giving them a limited window in which to have children.
Pregnant women who take antipsychotic medication are at a higher risk of diabetes and their babies are more likely to need special medical attention, a new pilot study suggests

A 46-year-old Orlando woman has become the oldest mother in the United Woman sets IVF birth record
A 46-year-old Orlando woman has become the oldest mother in the United States, and possibly in the world, to give birth to a healthy baby through in-vitro fertilization using her own fresh eggs.{ed unsure of the validity of this claim}
Poor diet before pregnancy linked with preterm birth
For the first time, researchers have confirmed that women who eat a poor diet before they become pregnant are around 50% more likely to have a preterm birth than those on a healthy diet. The study shows that women who consistently ate a diet high in protein and fruit prior to becoming pregnant were less likely to have a preterm birth, while those who consistently ate high fat and sugar foods, and take-out food were about 50% more likely to have a
High cholesterol levels may impair fertility in couples trying to achieve a pregnancy, according to a study. Couples in which each partner had a high cholesterol level took the longest time to reach pregnancy. Moreover, couples in which the woman had a high cholesterol level and the man did not also took longer to achieve pregnancy when compared to couples in which both partners had cholesterol levels in the acceptable range.
Sperm cells are extremely efficient at swimming against a current: How sperm travel long distances, through difficult terrain, to reach an egg
Like salmon traveling upstream to spawn, sperm cells are extremely efficient at swimming against the current, according to new research. The discovery may help us to understand how some sperm travel such long distances, through difficult terrain, to reach and fertilize an egg. Of the hundreds of millions of sperm cells that begin the journey up the oviducts, only a few hardy travelers will ever reach their destination. Not only do the cells have

Rheotaxis facilitates upstream navigation of mammalian sperm cells
Video 2. Human sperm cells swimming in a low-viscosity fluid (3 mPa·s) near the wall of a planar channel. The video shows that, at low viscosity, the flagellar beat of a human sperm cell typically exhibits a considerable chiral component. This follows from the fact that the flagellum never appears as a straight line (in contrast to bull sperms at same viscosity, compare Video 4). Scale bar 20 μ:m.
Staff Logbook. FertAid has developed an online activities logbook for all IVF personnel. There is a list of common procedures available but you are able to create a personalized activity list. You may log the number of cases each quarter and after authorization by your supervisor may be used for certification or competency by your clinic. There is no cost for this module.
FertAid has released the 2014 laboratory census. The aim is to provide clinics with a sense of what others are doing and how their activity compares to others.
In the article by Janevic et. al (2014) in F&S, a relationship between semen quality and stress has been identified
Comment
Clearly there are many ways to identify stress and this study will need to be repeated over larger groups but as a general concept, it is not surprising that perceived stress may impact on sperm maturation features such as motility & morphology. While the differences may not be clinically relevant, any impact may have other hidden factors that could influence sperm fertility both in vivo and in vitro. Perhaps some clinics may include an additional question on the semen sample questionnaire to do with recent stressful events. Does any clinic already do this and if so, what proportion of clients report in the affirmative. Reducing stress may mean a slightly better semen profile that may lead to IVF rather than ICSI. Save the couple a few dollars.
