Fertility preservation for girls and young women with cancer: population-based validation of criteria for ovarian tissue cryopreservation
The results of this analysis show that the Edinburgh selection criteria accurately identify the few girls and young women who will develop premature ovarian insufficiency, and validate their use for selection of patients for ovarian tissue cryopreservation. Further follow-up of this cohort of patients is likely to allow refinement of the criteria for this experimental procedure in girls and young women with cancer.
Metabolism of the preimplantation embryo: 40 years on [Archive-Review-Open Access]
The pivotal role of mitochondria in early embryo development and the DOHaD concept, and in providing a cellular focus for metabolic events is now recognized. Some unifying ideas are discussed: namely ‘stress–response models’ and the ‘quiet embryo hypothesis’: the latter aiming to relate the metabolism of individual preimplantation embryos to their subsequent viability. The review concludes by updating the state of knowledge of preimplantation em
Sperm-derived WW domain-binding protein, PAWP, elicits calcium oscillations and oocyte activation in humans and mice
Here, we show that PAWP triggers calcium oscillations and pronuclear formation in human and mouse oocytes similar to what is observed during intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Most important, sperm-induced calcium oscillations are blocked by coinjection of a competitive inhibitor, derived from the WWI domain-binding motif of PAWP, implying the requirement of sperm PAWP and an oocyte-derived WWI domain protein substrate of PAWP for successfu
Overall, this important review provides an updated summary of the most recent available literature describing etiology, diagnosis, and management of azoospermia. !
Polar body based aneuploidy screening is poorly predictive of embryo ploidy and reproductive potential
Polar body based aneuploidy screening results were less predictive of actual clinical outcomes than direct embryo assessment and may not be adequate to improve sustained implantation rates. In nearly one-third of cases the polar body based analysis failed to predict the ploidy of the embryo. This imprecision may hinder efforts for polar body based CCS to improve IVF clinical outcomes.
Some Reflections on Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection [PDF]
It seems that IMSI as a routine application is not state of the
art and the only confirmed indications for IMSI are recurrent implantation failure
following ICSI and severe male factor.
Individual commitment to a group effect: strengths and weaknesses of bovine embryo group culture [BOVINE]
The experiments showed that group culture of bovine embryos in Primo Vision® dishes is superior to individual culture, primarily because of the higher blastocyst rate achieved by slow embryos. Non-cleaved or arrested embryos do not hamper the ability of co-cultured bovine embryos to reach the blastocyst stage in group culture
Metabolic heterogeneity during preimplantation development: the missing link?
We argue that the legacy of metabolic heterogeneity, in part generated by the absence of gap junctions, is ‘rescued’ by the onset of apoptosis following EGA. In the context of human-assisted conception, since early embryos lacking gap junctions are more sensitive to environmental stress during cleavage, this would support transfer to the natural environment as early as possible after fertilization.
Fact file: What legal rights do the growing number of children born to surrogate mothers overseas have in Australia?
The recent baby Gammy case has exposed the pitfalls of the international commercial surrogacy trade. Gammy, a baby with Down syndrome, was left with his Thai surrogate mother while his healthy twin sister returned to Western Australia to live with her biological father and his wife.
Fertile discovery: Treating male infertility with synthetic protein
A promising method of treating male infertility using a synthetic version of the sperm-originated protein known as PAWP has been developed by researchers. The research promises to diagnose and treat cases of male factor infertility where a patient's sperm is unable to initiate or induce activation of the egg to form an early embryo.
Breaking the code: Donor-conceived children search for identity of fathers and their biological heritage
When you go to see your doctor, you assume that he or she will keep an accurate record of that consultation. But that is not what happened at a public hospital in Sydney. Australian Story reveals tonight that the Royal North Shore Hospital has launched an internal investigation into record-keeping practices in its former fertility clinic, after it discovered that a patient record had critical information removed
Sperm donor-conceived woman reveals unexpected biological connection to Professor Manning Clark
A young aeronautical engineer has revealed her unexpected biological connection to prominent Australian historian, Professor Manning Clark. Dr Lauren Burns disclosed the long-held secret to the ABC's Australian Story, describing how she spent four years in a complicated and frustrating quest to establish the name of the anonymous sperm donor involved in her conception
More than just X and Y: New genetic basis for sex determination
Men and women differ in obvious ways, and scientists have long known that genetic differences buried deep within our DNA underlie these distinctions. In the past, most research has focused on understanding how the genes that encode proteins act as sex determinants. But scientists have found that a subset of very small genes encoding short RNA molecules, called microRNAs, also play a key role in differentiating male and female tissues in the fruit
Thai surrogate mother of a baby with Down syndrome abandoned by Australian parents says she cannot afford baby Gammy's medical treatment
The Thai surrogate mother of a baby with Down syndrome who was abandoned by his Australian parents says she has been left to provide for the child who also suffers from a life-threatening heart condition.

Thai surrogate mother of a baby with Down syndrome abandoned by Australian parents says she cannot afford baby Gammy's medical treatment
Summary
Disturbing story that has not good outcomes regardless of how it will end.
Comment
In this case, the commissioning couple knew that one baby had Downs and asked the surrogate to abort but she declined due to religious views. Pity this was not canvassed before the transfer. The essence is that who has the greater right when one is renting a womb. Cannot help to think it is the commissioning couple. The underlying problem here is that many western governments have made surrogacy so difficult and or illegal that it forces couples to try elsewhere. When this happens, good governance is thrown out the window with agents and women keen to make some money from what is a natural process. The agents and other bodies involved in overseas surrogacy are only interested in money and overlook critical questions and common sense. If all goes well, then it is fine. But as in this situation, it does not, then it is bad for everyone. Make surrogacy uncomplicated and legal at home before criticism of what happens overseas.
