IVFD Sperm-derived WW domain-binding protein, PAWP, elicits calcium oscillations and oocyte activation in humans and mice
Sperm-delivered PAWP is, therefore, a unique protein with a nonredundant role during human and mouse fertilization, required to trigger zygotic development. Presented data confirm our previous findings in nonmammalian models and suggest potential applications of PAWP in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility.

IVFD Intralipid therapy for recurrent implantation failure: new hope or false dawn? [Archive 2011]
Recent reports of high pregnancy rates achievable in women with RIF have added fuel to the debate regarding the effectiveness of intralipid in modulating the immune system. We would like to assess if there is sufficient current evidence of acceptable quality to permit an assumption that intralipid therapy is an effective treatment for women undergoing repeated assisted reproduction cycles. We have concluded that appropriately controlled, large-sc

IVFD The impact of the time interval on in-vitro fertilisation success after failure of the first attempt.
The maximum increase was after two menstrual cycles (p = 0.001). The highest rate of ongoing pregnancy was in women that had the second attempt after the next menstrual cycle following failure of IVF (27.2%). After IVF failure, initiating the next attempt within 2–4 months increases the clinical pregnancy rates.

IVFD Clinical pregnancy after uterus transplantation
Conclusion(s) We have presented the first clinical pregnancy in a patient with absolute uterine infertility after uterus allotransplantation. Although the real success is the delivery of a healthy near-term baby, this clinical pregnancy is a great step forward and a proof of concept that the implantation phase works.

IVFD Habitual alcohol consumption associated with reduced semen quality and changes in reproductive hormones: a cross-sectional study among 1221 young Dani
Conclusions Our study suggests that even modest habitual alcohol consumption of more than 5 units per week had adverse effects on semen quality although most pronounced associations were seen in men who consumed more than 25 units per week. Alcohol consumption was also linked to changes in testosterone and SHBG levels. Young men should be advised to avoid habitual alcohol intake.

IVFD Moderate weekly alcohol intake linked to poorer sperm quality in healthy young men
Moderate alcohol intake of at least 5 units every week is linked to poorer sperm quality in otherwise healthy young men, suggests research. And the higher the weekly tally of units, the worse the sperm quality seems to be, the findings indicate, prompting the researchers to suggest that young men should be advised to steer clear of habitual drinking.

IVFD French Researchers 3D Print Embryo Models for In Vitro Fertilization
The 3D image of the particular embryo is created by integrating data gathered from several sections of the embryo via standard inverted light microscopy. Once the 3D model has been created, it can then be printed, giving ‘ex vitro’ visual access to in vitro embryos. Prior to this development, embryos could only be examined in a single plane. This inability to fully examine the embryo meant that despite all preparations, approximately 8%% of embr

IVFD Schools 32 Sets Of Twins Is Two Much
Under China's strict one-child policy, parents - especially city dwellers - face heavy fines if they have more than one son or daughter. The rules are relaxed for twins but parents still have to pay an annual fine called 'social maintenance'. But for the wealthy who can afford IVF in the first place this is rarely a problem.

IVFD Synthetic sperm protein raises the chance for successful in vitro fertilization
Having trouble getting pregnant - even with in vitro fertilization? Here's some hope: A new research report explains how scientists developed a synthetic version of a sperm-originated protein which induced embryo development in human and mouse eggs similar to the natural triggering of embryo development by the sperm cell during fertilization.

Title
Schools 32 Sets Of Twins Is Two Much
Summary
China couples exploit IVF - to the industries detriment!
Comment
FertAid has heard that couples in China are abusing IVF to get around the one child policy. The policy - aimed at controlling a growing population - is being circumvented using ART processes. Like the surrogacy issue in Thailand recently, such actions only cause the public and the law makers to see IVF technology as a dangerous technology that ultimately will see use by infertile couples being made more difficult. In particular, the use of surrogacy is very alarming as this starts to merge into exploitation and almost people trafficking. The unabashed pecuniary use of ART to achieve larger families is disappointing and starts to treat children as commodities. This is one area where Chinas hard line policies may work for a better outcome.

Title
Habitual alcohol consumption associated with reduced semen quality
Summary
A paper that provides some good guidelines on alcohol consumption and semen profile.
Comment
A natural question asked by most IVF couples is what can we do to help us falling pregnant. Aside for smoking and weight loss, there is often little constructive advice. This paper provides some guidelines on the amount of alcohol consumed and semen quality. The authors reported that 5 standard drinks/week may influence concentration and morphology but 25/week has a significant impact. This is not a great amount/day but it is not a great sacrifice either. A staff member collecting lifestyle details (do any clinics really do this, if not then maybe they should) could point out that 2 drinks/day is better than 3 and 1/day is even better. Of course the real problem with these studies is that a small and significant reduction may not have a meaningful impact of fertility if the profile is high but may impact if the semen quality is already poor.
