Artificial insemination with homologous (AIH) or donor semen (AID) is nowadays a very popular treatment option
for many subfertile women worldwide. The rationale for the use of artificial insemination is to increase gamete density
at the site of fertilisation. The main reason for the renewed interest in artificial insemination is undoubtly the refinement
of techniques for the preparation of washed motile spermatozoa. The sequence of events le
Successful use of human semen cryobanking for in vitro fertilization.
Frozen-thawed donor semen was compared with freshly ejaculated donor semen for in vitro fertilization of human oocytes in patients with infertile husbands. There was no significant difference in the fertilization rates between frozen-thawed (85%) and fresh spermatozoa (78%). Fertilization occurred with semen stored for as long as 27 months and with numbers of spermatozoa as low as 20,000/ml culture medium for insemination of oocytes. Pregnancy ra

Ovarian steroid replacement therapy in the ovariectomized ewe, given in the correct
sequence to mimic endogenous steroid changes in the normal ovulatory cycle, allows
the development of embryos transferred in utero. A similar type of sequential
therapy was designed for steroid replacement in women with primary ovarian failure.

Interleukin-1 deficiency prolongs ovarian lifespan in mice
Identifying a possible culprit, such as IL-1, may offer new insight into the mechanisms responsible for oocyte loss as well as practical interventions, such as IL-1 blockade, which aims to slow down the rate at which oocytes are eliminated and improve IVF outcomes.
Dehydroepiandrosterone improves follicular fluid bone morphogenetic protein-15 and accumulated embryo score of infertility patients with diminished ov
The level of BMP-15 in follicular fluid samples from the DHEA group was significantly higher than that of the control samples (P=.000). Patients after DHEA treatment demonstrated a significantly higher level of AMH and a significantly lower level of FSH, E2 compared to themselves prior to DHEA therapy (P=.015: P=.036: P=.002: respectively). Moreover, the accumulated score of embryos was significantly higher in the DHEA group (P=.033).
Advanced sperm selection techniques for assisted reproduction
Current evidence was insufficient to permit evaluation of the effectiveness of advanced sperm selection strategies in assisted reproductive technologist (ART). No evidence showed a difference between the groups in terms of any of the reported outcomes. Further studies of suitable quality are required before any of these advanced sperm selection techniques can be recommended for use in clinical practice.
A direct action for growth hormone in improving oocyte quality in poor responder patients.
This study demonstrates for the first time, the presence of receptors to GH on the human oocyte. Oocytes retrieved from older women showed significant decrease in the expression of GH receptors and amount of functional mitochondria when compared to those from younger patients. More interestingly, when older patients were treated with GH, a significant increase in functional mitochondria was observed in their oocytes. We conclude that GH exerts a
Individual commitment to a group effect: strengths and weaknesses of bovine embryo group culture
The experiments revealed that group culture of bovine embryos in Primo Vision dishes is superior to individual culture, primarily because of the higher blastocyst rate achieved by slow embryos. Non-cleaved or arrested embryos do not hamper the ability of co-cultured bovine embryos to reach the blastocyst stage in group culture.
Treatment with Ca2+ ionophore improves embryo development and outcome in cases with previous developmental problems: a prospective multicenter study
This is the first evidence that developmental incompetence of embryos is an additional indication for ionophore treatment. The present approach is exclusively for overcoming cleavage arrest.
Cell-free DNA in human follicular fluid as a biomarker of embryo quality
CfDNA level in follicular fluid samples corresponding to top quality embryos was significantly lower than in follicular fluid samples related to poor quality embryos (P = 0.022). Similarly, cfDNA level was also significantly lower in follicular fluid samples related to embryos with low fragmentation rate (≤:25%) than with high fragmentation rate (>25%) (P = 0.02).
Sperm analysis parameters as an indication for ICSI instead of IVF: benefit remains unclear
Since suitable studies are lacking, it remains unclear in which sperm analysis parameters assisted reproduction using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) can be superior to in vitro fertilization (IVF). This is the conclusion of the final report published by the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) on 6 November 2014
X-Ray fluorescence imaging and other analyses identify selenium and GPX1 as important in female reproductive function
We present the first XRF imaging of mammalian ovaries showing that Se is consistently localized to the granulosa cells of large healthy follicles. We conclude that Se and selenoproteins are elevated in large healthy follicles and may play a critical role as an antioxidant during late follicular development.
Man died at sperm bank after fourth donation in 10 days
A CHINESE man died after donating sperm four times in 10 days.
Zheng Gang, 23, was found slumped over and unconscious when staff broke down the door at a private booth in the Wuhan University clinic in Hubei Province. They’d become concerned when he hadn’t emerged from the booth in more than two hours, the New York Post reports.
For the first time, research has shown how much of a critical role the natural antioxidant selenium plays at the earliest stages of a woman's fertility. "Selenium is an essential trace element found in protein-rich foods like red meat, seafood and nuts. It is important for many biological functions, such as immune response, thyroid hormone production, and acts as an antioxidant, helping to detoxify damaging chemicals in the body," one researcher
Ilya Ivanovich Ivanov (Russian: И:л:ь:я:́: И:в:а:́:н:о:в:и:ч: И:в:а:н:о:́:в:, August 1 [O.S. July 20] 1870-March 20, 1932) was a Russian and Soviet biologist who specialized in the field of artificial insemination and the interspecific hybridization of animals. He was involved in controversial attempts to create a human-ape hybrid.
Sperm analysis parameters as an indication for ICSI instead of IVF: Benefit still unclear

Jury awards $9.5m to Burlington woman who sued IVF doctor for missing cancer diagnosis
A Middlesex County jury has awarded $9.5 million to a Burlington woman who sued her doctor at a Waltham fertility clinic for failing to detect her ovarian cancer, which has progressed to an advanced stage, according to court records and her attorney
Finding egg and sperm donors at this weekend’s Fertility Show - for many, that means getting on a plane
Despite a debate over the ethics, safety and commercial nature surrounding the search for egg and sperm donors in the UK, for the 3,500-4,000 individuals and couples visiting the Fertility Show in London this weekend, practicalities are likely to dominate. And for many, that means getting on a plane.
Slowing the biological clock: neutralizing immune system gene could improve success of fertility treatments
Difficulty in conceiving a child is a major challenge for one in seven couples in America, especially for those over the age of 35. Now a new discovery could boost the chances of conception in women undergoing in vitro fertilization treatments. Their new research reveals a linkage between the genes of the innate immune system - immunity with which human beings are born, rather than immunity they acquire during their lives - and ovarian longevity.
Blasts from the past: The Soviet ape-man scandal [Archive]
In February 1926, Russian biologist Ilia Ivanov set out for Guinea in French West Africa, where he planned to perform one of the world's most sensational experiments. Ivanov was an expert in artificial insemination and had used his ground-breaking methods to create an assortment of hybrid animals. Now he was going to try something even more radical - crossing an ape and a human.
This silly news story does have a darker side with some timely warnings.

Many clinics will have a story of someone who becomes sick while locked in a sperm collection room. However, if a man has a medical issue while trying to produce a sample, say a coronary or a diabetic fit, there must be both a check of the time the man has spent in the room and an action plan when this time is exceeded and also a emergency button to be pressed in case of an emergency. Failure to have such policies in place may make a clinic vulnerable to litigation by the donors family if in case of death. A health check before hand may provide some warnings.
