Comment:This mailout contains a link to a news article relating sitting to longterm poor health. Concerns may be expressed that long periods of sitting for ICSI and PGS may be an occupational risk that clinics should consider and limit the time each scientist spends sitting. Also an article on the ICSI trends in the USA. Plus a good article on sperm thermotaxis. Survey-2014 Laboratory Census

IVFD Largest study of babies born after infertility treatment shows significant improvements in health over past 20 years
The last two decades has seen a steady improvement in the health outcomes of children born after assisted reproduction (ART), with fewer babies being born preterm, with low birth weight, stillborn or dying within the first year of life.

IVFD Trends in perinatal health after assisted reproduction: a Nordic study from the CoNARTaS group
It is assuring that data from four countries confirm an overall improvement over time in the perinatal outcomes of children conceived after ART. Furthermore, data show the beneficial effect of single embryo transfer, not only in regard to lowering the rate of multiples but also concerning the health of singletons.

IVFD Behavioral mechanism of human sperm in thermotaxis: a role for hyperactivation
This is the first study that reveals the behavior of human spermatozoa in thermotaxis. This behavior is very similar to that observed during human sperm chemotaxis, suggesting commonality of guidance mechanisms in mammalian spermatozoa. This study further substantiates the function of hyperactivation as a means to direct spermatozoa in guidance mechanisms.

IVFD Trends in Use of and Reproductive Outcomes Associated With Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
Conclusions and Relevance Among fresh IVF cycles in the United States, ICSI use increased from 36.4% in 1996 to 76.2% in 2012, with the largest relative increase among cycles without male factor infertility. Compared with conventional IVF, ICSI use was not associated with improved postfertilization reproductive outcomes, irrespective of male factor infertility diagnosis.

IVFD Hair mercury concentrations and in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes among women from a fertility clinic
Total hair mercury (Hg) was measured among 205 women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment and the association with prospectively collected IVF outcomes (229 IVF cycles) was evaluated. Hair Hg levels (median = 0.62 ppm, range: 0.03-5.66 ppm) correlated with fish intake (r = 0.59), and exceeded the recommended EPA reference of 1 ppm in 33% of women.

IVFD Can repeated IVF–ICSI-cycles be avoided by using blastocysts developing from poor-quality cleavage stage embryos?
The surplus blastocysts resulted in clinical pregnancy, spontaneous abortion and delivery rates of 24.6%, 27.3% and 17.2% respectively. The use of surplus blastocysts raised cumulative delivery rate from 43% to 47% and 53 repeated new cycles were avoided. This study shows that the cumulative delivery rate can be increased, and repeated IVF–ICSI treatments avoided by using blastocysts developing from poor-quality cleavage stage embryos, which othe

IVFD Knockdown of hypothalamic RFRP3 prevents chronic stress-induced infertility and embryo resorption.
We show that chronic stress has long-term effects on pregnancy success, even post-stressor, that are mediated by RFRP3. This points to RFRP3 as a potential clinically relevant single target for stress-induced infertility. - See more at: http://elifesciences.org/content/4/e04316#sthash.w2BDMwna.dpuf

IVFD Sitting for long periods increases risk of disease and early death, regardless of exercise
The amount of time a person sits during the day is associated with a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and death, regardless of regular exercise, according to a review study.

IVFD Blocking hormone could eliminate stress-induced infertility
Stress is known to interfere with reproduction, but a new study shows that the effects of chronic stress on fertility persist long after the stress is gone. This is because a hormone that suppresses fertility, GnIH, remains high even after stress hormone levels return to normal. In rats, they successfully blocked the hormone gene and restored normal reproductive behavior, suggesting therapeutic potential for stressed humans and animals in captive

Title
Sitting and Life risks
Summary
It may seem silly but IVF Laboratory staff spend a lot of time sitting for ICSI and PDG. IS this an occupational risk and should there be guidelines
Comment
There is little OH&S issues in an IVF lab compared to other industries. However, the time spent sitting may have long term consequences. Some of these may not manifest themselves until after their IVF career is over. The time spent sitting may be one of these risks and possibly, clinics and embryology societies may well benefit from setting some guidelines. For example, a scientist should not sit in one place (doing an ICSI or PDG) for more than 1 hour in ever 2 hours and no more than say 4hr/shift. If there are no guidelines then clinics may find themselves in litigation a few year down the track.

Title
Trends in Use of and Reproductive Outcomes Associated With Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
Summary
There has been more than a doubling in the use of ICSI in the USA between 1992 and 2012 mainly for couples without a male factor competent.
Comment
The authors data suggested indirectly than this may have been associated with a decrease in cycle cancellation due to failed fertilisation but also a slight decrease in implantation rates and live births. The authors had no information to explain the increase nor did they express concern in this trend. It does however mean both an increase in the cost of ART by couples since all ICSI will attract an ICSI fee and an increase in the workload of embryology staff and more stress on embryo culture systems since an ICSI cycle requires increased handling of gametes and embryos.
