Comment:I have included a few links to articles on the follicle temperature given recent posts to embryomail. There is also a link to an news article on BPA and how one of its metabolites is very estrogenic. Something to watch out for at a clinical level? Plus a link to videos for Halosperm methodology and a few jobs links. Finally a note on the passing away of my freind Peter Sjoblom.

Metabolism of the preimplantation embryo: 40 years on - Henry J Leese
This review considers how our understanding of preimplantation embryo metabolism has progressed since the pioneering work on this topic in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Research has been stimulated by a desire to understand how metabolic events contribute to the development of the zygote into the blastocyst, the need for biomarkers of embryo health with which to improve the success of assisted conception technologies, and latterly by the ‘Devel
Temperature gradients in female reproductive tissues
The temperature of internal body organs in mammals such as rabbits and humans is widely regarded as uniform, but this is not correct. Temperatures in reproductive tissues such as ovaries and oviducts vary according to the stage of a menstrual or oestrous cycle. Such changes in temperature are thought to be critically involved in the maturation of eggs and spermatozoa and thus in events shortly before and after fertilization.
Graafi:an follicles are cooler than neighbouring ovarian tissues and deep rectal temperatures
It is concluded that follicular temperatures may infl:uence the meiotic
progression and cytoplasmic maturation of oocytes and act to regulate enzymatic activity in the biosynthetic pathways for steroid and/or peptide hormones.
RAB-Like 2 Has an Essential Role in Male Fertility, Sperm Intra-Flagellar Transport, and Tail Assembly
Perturbed RABL2 function, as exemplified by the Mot mouse line that contains a mutation in a critical protein–protein interaction domain, results in male sterility characterized by reduced sperm output, and sperm with aberrant motility and short tails. Our data demonstrate a novel function for the RABL protein family, an essential role for RABL2 in male fertility and a previously uncharacterised mechanism for protein delivery to the flagellum.
3D Models of MBP, a Biologically Active Metabolite of Bisphenol A, in Human Estrogen Receptor α: and Estrogen Receptor β:
Bisphenol A [BPA] is a widely dispersed environmental chemical because the BPA monomer is a weak transcriptional activator of human estrogen receptor in cell culture. A BPA metabolite [MBP], has transcriptional activity at nM concentrations, which is 1000-fold lower than the concentration for BPA, suggesting that MBP may be an environmental estrogen
Time to Pregnancy: A Computational Method for Using the Duration of Non-Conception for Predicting Conception
We have applied our model to female reproductive ageing. For women over the age of 35, it may be appropriate to start investigation and treatment more quickly than for younger women. Ignoring reproductive decline during the period of attempted conception added up to two cycles to the computed number of cycles before reaching a metric of subfertility.
Mathematics Sheds Light On What Delays in Getting Pregnant Mean for Prospects of Having a Baby
A new mathematical method can help to predict a couple’s chances of becoming pregnant, according to how long they have been trying. The model may also shed light on how long they should wait before seeking medical help.
Stem cells made from skin have become "grandparents" after generations of life were created in experiments by scientists in Japan. The cells were used to create eggs, which were fertilised to produce baby mice. These later had their own babies.
Child-Free Women Feel Intense Pressure to Have Kids, but Rarely Stress Over It
Women who choose to be permanently childfree perceive more social pressures to become mothers than other women, but feel less distress about not having kids than women who are childless from infertility or other reasons, a new national study shows.
Sperm's Swimming Skills: Discovery Shed Light On Male Infertility, Yields Clues to Development of Male Contraceptive Pill
New insights into swimming skills of sperm shed light on male infertility, which affects one in 20 men, and could provide a new avenue to the development of a male contraceptive pill.
BPA's Real Threat May Be After It Has Metabolized: Chemical Found in Many Plastics Linked to Multiple Health Threats
Bisphenol A or BPA is a synthetic chemical widely used in the making of plastic products ranging from bottles and food can linings to toys and water supply lines. When these plastics degrade, BPA is released into the environment and routinely ingested.
Study Tests Potential New Drug to Reduce Pain and Symptoms of Endometriosis
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), endometriosis, a gynecological disorder in which cells from the uterus lining grow in other areas of the body, is the number one reason for a hysterectomy in women ages 18-35. Current treatment options for endometriosis are severely limited by side effects of existing medications and surgical options have more risks. A nationwide clinical trial is testing an investigational drug as a potential n

Participants are shown 20+ sets of images from one sample and asked to estimate the number Normal and abnormal sperm ( according to the methodology) and calculate a % DFI
I have included a note from Sally Catt detailing the sad news that Peter Sjoblom has died. Peter and Yvonne were good friends of mine and I would like to pass on my condolences to Yvonne and Yvette and to acknowledge Peter was a fine, caring and dedicated embryologist. He will be missed.
