IVFD Teratozoospermia: spotlight on the main genetic actors in the human
The studies described here provide valuable information regarding the genetic and molecular defects causing infertility, to improve our understanding of the physiopathology of teratozoospermia while giving a detailed characterization of specific features of spermatogenesis. Furthermore, these findings have a significant influence on the diagnostic strategy for teratozoospermic patients allowing the clinician to provide the patient with informed g

IVFD Stunted tail sperm defect: An Ultrastructural Study Of An Atypical Case (2006)
Scanning electron microscopy revealed sperm heads with intact nuclei and acrosomal regions. To our surprise, the 12% of the stunted tails evaluated had biflagellate arrangement while the other ones had uniflagellate tail.

IVFD Tracking nutrient transfer at the human maternofetal interface from 4 weeks to term
We deduce that decidual cell glycogen is broken down for transport into the placenta where the products may be reassembled into glycogen or used for metabolic processes. First trimester histiotrophe is internalised by syncytiotrophoblast, then broken down in apical vacuoles containing lysosomal markers. This process declines after haemotrophic nutrition commences

IVFD High-energy diets: a threat for male fertility?
Male fertility is declining in developed countries, as well as in developing countries. External factors linked to lifestyle, such as eating disorders, negatively affect spermatogenesis, both at central and gonadal levels. The overconsumption of high-energy diets (HED) alters the functioning of the male reproductive axis and consequently affects the testicular physiology, disrupting its metabolism and bioenergetic capacity. Testicular metabolism

IVFD Relationship between physical occupational exposures and health on semen quality: data from the Longitudinal Investigation of Fertility and the Enviro
A negative relationship among occupational exertion, hypertension, and the number of medications with semen quality was identified. As these are potentially modifiable factors, further research should determine whether treatment or cessation may improve male fecundity.

IVFD Predictors of In Vitro Fertilization Outcomes in Women with Highest Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Levels ≥:12 IU/L: A Prospective Cohort Study
Our findings suggest that it would be beneficial for women with increased FSH levels to attempt a cycle of IVF. Results of ovarian stimulation, especially embryo quantity appear to be the best predictors of IVF outcomes and those can only be obtained from a cycle of IVF. Therefore, increased basal FSH levels should not discourage women from attempting a cycle of IVF.

IVFD Digital Microfluidic Dynamic Culture of Mammalian Embryos on an Electrowetting on Dielectric (EWOD) Chip
Our results show that the dynamic culture powered with EWOD can manipulate a single droplet containing one mouse embryo and culture to the blastocyst stage. The rate of embryo cleavage to a hatching blastocyst with a dynamic culture is significantly greater than that with a traditional static culture (p<0.05). The EWOD chip enhances the culture of mouse embryos in a dynamic environment. To test the reproductive outcome of the embryos collected fr

IVFD Adherence compounds in embryo transfer media for assisted reproductive technologies [Cochrane review]
Analysis of the 16 studies that were identified using functional concentrations of HA showed an increase in the chances of pregnancy and live birth (450 vs 367 per 1000) but also an increase in the chance of the more risky outcome of multiple pregnancy (282 vs 175 per 1000). This increase in multiple pregnancy rate may be the result of improved pregnancy outcomes due to the addition of the adherence compound and the policy of transferring more th

IVFD Beijing Olympics 'natural study' links pollution to lower birth weight
Exposure to high levels of pollution can have a significant impact on fetal growth and development, researchers conclude. Their study found that women who were pregnant during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when pollution levels were reduced by the Chinese government, gave birth to children with higher birth weights compared to those who were pregnant before and after the games.

IVFD US 'will not fund research for modifying embryo DNA'
Modifying the DNA of embryos is a "line that should not be crossed", a leading figure in US research says. Dr Francis Collins, National Institutes of Health director, was responding to reports that the first embryos had been modified in China. He argued there were "serious and unquantifiable safety issues", big ethical questions and no compelling medical reason to do it. He said the NIH would not fund such research in the US

IVFD Womb milk nourishes human embryo during first weeks of pregnancy (New scientist).
Call it the milk of life – not breast milk, but womb milk. For the first 11 weeks of pregnancy, before the mother's nutrient-rich blood supply is plumbed in, all the materials and energy for building a baby are supplied by secretions from glands in the uterus lining.

IVFD IVFeLearning CPD Module: Understanding Sperm Morphology Part 1.
The definition of what is a normal sperm has changed in recent times from one looking at a mans fertility to the diagnosis of male infertility. In this module, Roelof Mankveld explores the history of how the definition of sperm morphology has morphed from `normal` to `abnormal`.

[quote] - Result(s): In all, complete data were available for 456 men, with a mean age of 31.8 years. Work-related heavy exertion was consistently associated with lower semen concentration and total sperm count. Thirteen percent of men who reported heavy exertion displayed oligospermia, compared with 6% who did not report workplace exertion. Shift work, night work, vibration, noise, heat, and prolonged sitting were not associated with semen quality. Men with high blood pressure had significantly lower strict morphology scores compared with normotensive men (17% vs. 21%). In contrast, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and composite of total comorbidities were not associated with semen quality. The number of medications a man was taking as a proxy of health status was associated with semen quality. There was a negative association between number of medications and sperm count. [end quote]
