Semen quality of young adult ICSI offspring: the first results
These first results in a small group of ICSI men indicate a lower semen quantity and quality in young adults born after ICSI for male infertility in their fathers.
Relationship between hair and salivary cortisol and pregnancy in women undergoing IVF
These findings provide preliminary evidence that longer term systemic cortisol may influence reproductive outcomes: and in turn suggests that interventions to reduce cortisol prior to commencing IVF could improve treatment outcomes.
Elucidation of the Fanconi Anemia Protein Network in Meiosis and Its Function in the Regulation of Histone Modifications
Precise epigenetic regulation of the sex chromosomes is vital for the male germline. Here, we analyze meiosis in eight mouse models deficient for various DNA damage response (DDR) factors, including Fanconi anemia (FA) proteins. We reveal a network of FA and DDR proteins in which FA core factors FANCA, FANCB, and FANCC are essential for FANCD2 foci formation, whereas BRCA1 (FANCS), MDC1, and RNF8 are required for BRCA2 (FANCD1) and SLX4 (FANCP) a
Buying and selling human eggs: infertility providers’ ethical and other concerns regarding egg donor agencies
Given the potential limitations of the current model of self-regulation of agencies, the present data suggest needs to consider stronger professional guidelines or possible governmental regulations to establish, require and enforce higher standards for agencies to follow, regarding advertising to potential donors and recipients, arranging for appropriate informed consent concerning risks and benefits involved, and for quality control. How do laboratory embryo transfer techniques affect IVF outcomes? A review of current literature
In this review, several parameters of the embryo transfer procedure are examined, such as the: (i) culture medium volume and loading technique: (ii) syringe and catheters used for embryo transfer: (iii) viscosity and composition of the embryo transfer medium: (iv) environment of embryo culture: (v) timing of embryo transfer: (vi) and standardization of the embryo transfer techniques. The aim of this manuscript is to review these factors and compa
Protein network linked to cancer is critical to male fertility
Researchers studying reproductive science identified a network of proteins often linked to cancer as also important to male fertility and the birth of healthy offspring, according to a study.
Modified natural cycle IVF more cost-effective and affordable than traditional IVF
A cost and live birth analysis of six conventional IVF treatment strategies against six similar, corresponding strategies using modified natural cycle IVF showed significant savings with the latter method. This lowers the barriers of access, particularly for young couples who tend to have fewer resources, that may not be able to afford conventional fertility treatment.
First results from the world’s oldest group of ICSI men show they have lower semen quantity and quality
First results from the world’s oldest group of young men conceived by means of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) fertility treatment because of their fathers’ infertility have shown that they have lower sperm quantity and quality than men who were spontaneously conceived.
New evidence that hormone levels measured in hair can affect IVF success by almost one-third
Levels of a hormone [cortisol] when measured in hair can significantly predict the likelihood of pregnancy in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, scientists have revealed.
The first semen test of ICSI children is a bit of a worry.
Comment
This paper from the clinic that first developed ICSI has presented data on the semen quality of young men from the initial cohort of ICSI derived embryos. The data is preliminary by nature and compares their semen profile to age matched control (Not IVF conceived children). It paints a distributing image that ICSI children may have a reduced fertility not necessarily related to the fathers semen quality.// ICSI in the early years, was used only for severe male factor infertility whereas these days it is used for many others reasons, not the least being convenience to avoid a failed fertilisation, standardisation of treatment, patient demand and maybe revenue. No doubt in time, as further studies are undertaken in this critical topic, the impacts will be diluted as more men with normal semen profiles are added to the pool, this possible decrease in fertility may not be supported or masked. The issue remains though that while couples could argue that if their children are also infertile, ICSI treatment may also be used, so what is the problem. One problem is that if ICSI produces more infertile male children, then it is the sons partner who will need to undergo IVF/ICSI, the son has only to produce a sample.//As with most things, once knowledge is available, it required for clients to be fully aware before treatment otherwise clinics are leaving themselves open to future litigation.// The last issue is that this study only looks at ICSI childrens semen profile. One important study to be performed is whether ICSI has an impact on female fertility!//
