IVFD Disruptive reproductive technologies
Nevertheless, this remarkable feat may one day be supplanted by in vitro gametogenesis (IVG)—the generation of eggs and sperm from pluripotent stem cells in a culture dish. Currently feasible in mice (1, 2), IVG is poised for future success in humans and promises new possibilities for the fields of reproductive and regenerative medicine. At the same time, IVG raises vexing ethical and social policy challenges in need of redress. Here, we describe

IVFD Improved detection of mineral oil toxicity using an extended mouse embryo assay
The standard MEA used by manufacturers does not detect potentially lethal toxicity of peroxides in mineral oil. While group culture may mask toxicity, protein supplementation and oxygen concentration have minimal effect on assay sensitivity. The eMEA and time-lapse morphokinetic assessment are equally effective in detection of peroxide toxicity and thus provide manufacturers and end-users a simple process modification that can be readily adopted

IVFD Morphologic grading of euploid blastocysts influences implantation and ongoing pregnancy rates
Contrary to prior published studies, the current data suggest that blastocyst morphologic grading and particularly inner cell mass grade is a useful predictor of OPR per euploid embryo. Morphologic grading should be used to help in the selection among euploid blastocysts.

IVFD Evaluation of in vitro fertilization outcomes using interleukin-8 in culture medium of human preimplantation embryos
In the EM [embryo culture media] from HPE, IL-8 is associated with higher pregnancy rates, higher IRs, and higher N LBPP, so IL-8 may be an independent predictor for pretransfer assessment of the embryo development potential in IVF patients

IVFD Effects of female and male body mass indices on the treatment outcomes and neonatal birth weights associated with in vitro fertilization/intracytoplas
Increased female BMI negatively affected live births conceived via IVF. Regarding ICSI, no significant differences were found in the outcomes in terms of parental BMI. The singleton neonates’ NBWs increased with parental BMI conceived via IVF/ICSI. However, parental BMI did not significantly affect the NBWs of twins conceived via IVF/ICSI.

IVFD Effect of semen quality on human sex ratio in in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection: an analysis of 27,158 singleton infants bor
In IVF, lower sperm motility was associated with a statistically significant reduction in sex ratio: ICSI with either ejaculated or nonejaculated sperm was associated with a statistically significant reduction in sex ratio regardless of semen quality.

IVFD Examining the efficacy of six published time-lapse imaging embryo selection algorithms to predict implantation to demonstrate the need for the develop
These results highlight the need for the development of in-house ESAs (embryo-selection algorithms) that are specific to the patient, treatment, and environment. These data suggest that currently available ESAs may not be clinically applicable and lose their diagnostic value when externally applied.

IVFD Why do killer whales go through menopause? Mother-daughter conflict is key
Killer whales are one of only three species that are known to go through menopause, surviving long after they've stopped reproducing. Those older females play an essential role in helping their younger family members to find food and survive even in lean times. But, researchers report in a new study, the reason older females stop reproducing has more to do with conflict between mothers and their daughters than it does with cooperation.

IVFD The promise and peril of emerging reproductive technologies - Scientists call for proactively addressing legal, ethical challenges
While in vitro gametogenesis carries a promise to unravel the fundamental mechanisms of devastating genetic forms of infertility and to pave the way to a range of new therapies, the technique also raises a number of vexing legal and ethical questions that society should address before IVG becomes ready for prime-time clinical use in human patients, a trio of scholars argues.
