Comment:This weeks newsletter posts links to 2 new surveys. One on embryologist training and qualifications (tell everyone about this & post on your own blogs) and secondly, draft survey for Embryologist day. Post suggestions to Liesl Nel at lnthemaat@gmail.com for final changes before voting can be available. Oh & by the way a post showing Sperm DNA damage is linked to poor outcomes after IVF BUT NOT after ICSI- hardly surprising. Does this mean we should all do ICSI or test all for Sperm DNA Damage!

Sperm DNA damage has a negative association with live-birth rates after IVF
Sperm DNA damage was also associated with low live-birth rates following IVF in both men and couples with idiopathic infertility: 39% of couples and 41% of men with idiopathic infertility have high sperm DNA damage. Sperm DNA damage assessed by the Comet assay has a close inverse relationship with live-birth rates after IVF. Following ICSI, no significant differences in sperm DNA damage were found between any groups of patients.
Selection pressures on body size often differ between the sexes across many species, including humans: among men individuals of average height enjoy the highest reproductive success, while shorter women have the highest reproductive success. Given its high heritability, IASC over human height is likely.
Extreme sex ratio variation in relation to change in condition around conception [in horses but interesting nevertheless wtr glucose]
Adaptive theory predicts that mothers would be advantaged by adjusting the sex ratio of their offspring in relation to their offspring's future reproductive success. Studies investigating sex ratio variation in mammals have produced notoriously inconsistent results, although recent studies suggest more consistency if sex ratio variation is related to maternal condition at conception, potentially mediated by changes in circulating glucose level.
High Sperm DNA Damage a Leading Cause of 'Unexplained Infertility', Research Finds
New research from Queen's University Belfast has uncovered the cause of infertility for 80 per cent of couples previously diagnosed with 'unexplained infertility'.
Drinking one or two glasses of wine a week during pregnancy can have an impact on a child's IQ, a study says. Researchers from Oxford and Bristol universities looked at the IQ scores of 4,000 children as well as recording the alcohol intake of their mothers.
Sperm Length Variation Is Not a Good Sign for Fertility
Perhaps variety is the very spice of life, but as a matter of producing human life, it could be the bane of existence. That's the indication of a new study in the journal Human Reproduction that found men with wider variation in sperm length, particularly in the flagellum, had lower concentrations of sperm that could swim well. Those with more consistently made sperm seemed to have more capable ones.
Men and Women Battle for Ideal Height: Evidence of an Intralocus Sexual Conflict Currently Raging in Human DNA
A battle about the ideal height would appear to be raging in men's and women's genes. Gert Stulp, PhD candidate at the University of Groningen, has shown that this conflict is leading to a difference in reproductive success between men and women of varying height

1st INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON TROUBLESHOOTING IN ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGIES.
MAIN GOAL: Participants will learn to develop strategies for troubleshooting, problem solving and global quality management. The course includes practical applications of physical and chemical laws related to cell culture. Students will be made familiar with troubleshooting via role-playing exercises in which the participants assume the role of characters in a fictional setting based on real laboratory
issues from past scenarios.
