Fertility: Putrescine Water May Be Fountain of Youth for Human Eggs
An Ottawa scientist has discovered a critical reason why women experience fertility problems as they get older. The breakthrough by Dr. Johné Liu, a senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and professor at the University of Ottawa, also points to a simple solution that could increase the viability of egg cells for women in their late 30s and older -putrescine water.
Peri-ovulatory putrescine to reduce aneuploid conceptions
Putrescine is a naturally occurring, small metabolite easily absorbed and distributed throughout the organism. A high dose of putrescine supplementation similar to that used in our study has been given safely to neonatal calves and pigs as an ingredient of soybean-based milk replacement [7].
Asthma in children born after infertility treatment: findings from the UK Millennium Cohort Study
The findings add to the growing body of evidence suggesting an association between subfertility, ART and asthma in children. Further work is needed to establish causality and elucidate the underlying mechanism. These findings are generalizable to singletons only, and further work on multiples is needed.
New loci associated with birth weight identify genetic links between intrauterine growth and adult height and metabolism
Birth weight within the normal range is associated with a variety of adult-onset diseases, but the mechanisms behind these associations are poorly understood1. Previous genome-wide association studies of birth weight identified a variant in the ADCY5 gene associated both with birth weight and type 2 diabetes and a second variant, near CCNL1, with no obvious link to adult traits2
Age at menopause and its influencing factors in a cohort of survivors of childhood cancer: earlier but rarely premature
This study provides data on risk factors for a reduced fertility window in order to inform survivors at risk and help oncologists to design new therapeutic protocols avoiding this risk. This study does not confirm the high rate of premature menopause reported by the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, but this population differs from theirs (no leukemia and a lower percentage of lymphoma).
Embryo survival gene may fight range of diseases: study
A gene that keeps embryos alive appears to control the immune system and determine how it fights chronic diseases like hepatitis and HIV, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, scientists said on Monday.
In a paper published in the Nov. 21 issue of Cell, broadens the understanding of how cells regulate silencing of the X chromosome in a process known as X-inactivation.
Predicting the Age at Menopause of Women Having Suffered from Childhood Cancers
The data revealed that these women, in particular those who had undergone unilateral oophorectomy or who had been treated with alkylating agents and who had received a radiation dose to the ovaries, were menopaused on average 4 to 7 years earlier than average. This study provided important data about the fertility window of women who had suffered from childhood cancer and information concerning the associated risk factors, but did not confirm the
Fitness for Toad Sperm: Secret Is to Mate Frequently
Fertility tests frequently reveal that males have problems with the quality of their sperm. The problems often relate to sperm senescence, which is a reduction in quality with age. Sperm senescence can arise either before or after the DNA in the sperm cells is produced by a process known as meiosis. So-called "pre-meiotic" senescence results from accumulated damage in the germline cells with increasing age and results in older males having sperm
Genes Link Growth in the Womb With Adult Metabolism and Disease
Researchers have identified four new genetic regions that influence birth weight, providing further evidence that genes as well as maternal nutrition are important for growth in the womb. Three of the regions are also linked to adult metabolism, helping to explain why smaller babies have higher rates of chronic diseases later in life
An IVF birth more than doubles the likelihood of a child developing asthma, research has suggested. In the most extreme cases the risk is increased almost five times, according to the findings published in the journal Human Reproduction. Children conceived with artificial help are also more likely to wheeze or take anti-asthmatic medicines by the age of five.
Children born after fertility treatments, such as IVF, may have a slightly higher chance of developing asthma, research suggests. In a study of more than 13,000 UK children, five-years-olds were about twice as likely to have asthma if they were not conceived naturally
The sperm count of French men fell by a third between 1989 and 2005, a study suggests. The semen of more than 26,600 French men was tested in the study, reported in the journal Human Reproduction.
Men With Erection Problems Are Three Times More Likely to Have Inflamed Gums, Study Finds
Men in their thirties who had inflamed gums caused by severe periodontal disease were three times more likely to suffer from erection problems, according to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
Genes Linked to Low Birth Weight, Adult Shortness and Later Diabetes Risk
An international team of genetics researchers has discovered four new gene regions that contribute to low birth weight. Three of those regions influence adult metabolism, and appear to affect longer-term outcomes such as adult height, risk of type 2 diabetes and adult blood pressure.
Deficiency of ovarian ornithine decarboxylase contributes to aging-related egg aneuploidy in mice
Moreover, a combination of putrescine supplementation in mouse drinking water leading up to oocyte retrieval and in oocyte maturation medium reduced egg aneuploidies of the older mice from 12.7% to 5.3%. Therefore, ovarian ODC deficiency might be an important etiology of maternal aging-related aneuploidies, and peri-ovulatory putrescine supplementation might reduce the risk of aneuploid conceptions in older women.
This is a survey of the background and level of experience embryologists have around the world. Post this link on to your own societies email and lets try to get a truly international flavour to this survey about the current status of who is an embryologist.
