Disordered IL-33/ST2 Activation in Decidualizing Stromal Cells Prolongs Uterine Receptivity in Women with Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
Signals from these cultures prolonged the implantation window but also caused subsequent pregnancy failure in mice. Thus, Il-33/ST2 activation in HESCS drives an autoinflammatory response that controls the temporal expression of receptivity genes. Failure to constrain this response predisposes to miscarriage by allowing out-of-phase implantation in an unsupportive uterine environment.
Insulin and IGF1 Receptors Are Essential for XX and XY Gonadal Differentiation and Adrenal Development in Mice
These findings indicate that prior to sex determination somatic progenitors in Insr:Igf1r mutant gonads are not lineage primed and thus incapable of upregulating/repressing the male and female genetic programs required for cell fate restriction. In consequence, embryos lacking functional insulin/IGF signaling exhibit (i) complete agenesis of the adrenal cortex, (ii) embryonic XY gonadal sex reversal, with a delay of Sry upregulation and the subs
New Strategies Needed to Encourage Male Cancer Survivors to Consider Future Fertility
New strategies are needed to encourage men who have banked sperm prior to cancer treatment to engage with ongoing fertility monitoring programmes, researchers from the University of Sheffield have found.
Repeated Miscarriage: Scientists Pinpoint Molecular Signals That Make Some Women Prone to Miscarriage
Scientists have identified molecular signals that control whether embryos are accepted by the womb, and that appear to function abnormally in women who have suffered repeated miscarriages
An Embryo That Is Neither Male nor Female: Impact of Three Unexpected Sex Determination Factors Analyzed
So, is it a girl or a boy? This is the first question parents ask at the birth of an infant. Though the answer is obvious, the mechanism of sex determination is much less so. Researchers at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) attempt to shed light on this complex process by identifying the crucial role played by insulin and IGF1 and IGF2 growth factors, a family of hormones known for its role in metabolism and growth. In the absence of these factors
The Embryo Bank Dilemma: Reviewing the Issues, Historical Perspectives and Offering Potential Solutions
In my last blog, `Why Creating ‘McEmbryos` is Just Plain Wrong,` I wrote about my concerns regarding the creation of an embryo bank at a California clinic. In this follow-up segment, I want to re-state the issues, discuss the past history of embryo banking in the U.S., provide a list of recently written thoughtful blogs on the topic, offer possible solutions to the dilemma and discuss where we should go from here.
Sperm donor to lesbian couple sued for child support
A sperm donor in Kansas, USA, has been ordered to pay $6,000 in child support to a lesbian couple who he helped conceive. William Marotta donated sperm to Jennifer Schreiner and Angela Bauer after seeing their advert on classifieds website Craigslist. Schreiner subsequently gave birth to a daughter in 2009.
Professor Susan Bewley began the discussion by asking the question: 'Who Benefits From Women Becoming Unfit to Reproduce?' The answer: the industry which profits when it can do nothing to change the biological reality. The biological reality is, Bewley posited, that female reproductive health decreases with age. Gynaecological complications such as pre-eclampsia and stillbirth, on the other hand, increase.

Worldwide infertility rates unchanged in 20 years says World Health Organisation
Research by the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that in 2010, 48.5 million couples worldwide were unable to have a child. They found that 1.9 percent of women aged 20-44 who wanted a child were unable to have their first live birth and 10.5 percent of women who had previously given birth were unable to have another baby after five years of trying. This represented a 0.1 percent and 0.4 percent decrease from 1990, respectively.
Court of Human Rights overturns Costa Rica's ban on IVF
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) has overturned a prohibition on IVF in Costa Rica saying that it infringed provisions under the American Convention on Human Rights. The ban was originally implemented by the Costa Rican Government in an effort to protect human life. Costa Rica's Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that the practice of discarding 'spare' embryos in IVF was unconstitutional as it infringed the right to life under article 4
Changes to commercial surrogacy arrangements in India, introduced just before Christmas, have cut off one of the more popular avenues for Australians wanting to become surrogate parents. While heading overseas for commercial surrogacy is illegal in Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT, hundreds of Australians still flew to India every year to become parents.

A Western Australian judge has granted a newly widowed woman the right to retrieve and store sperm from her dead husband, although a further court order will be required before it can be used for any purpose. The woman, referred to in the judgment as Ms C, had been trying to conceive and recently started IVF treatment with her husband, before he took his own life at the end of December. The husband, Mr C, had a history of depression. His body was
