Reproductive medicine: still more ART than science?
Reproductive medicine has come a long way since then, and there have been dramatic advances in the field, such that biological parenthood is a reality for many couples for whom adoption was the only available route in the past. The gold standard in reproductive medicine is now to provide childless couples with the best possible management of their fertility problems, while at the same time ensuring that they are not exposed to unnecessary risks
Influence of ultra-low oxygen (2%) tension on in-vitro human embryo development
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Based on the present study results, there is no benefit in lowering the oxygen tension from 5 to 2% from Day 3 onwards during extended human embryo culture.
Methodological approaches to analyzing IVF data with multiple cycles
The use of CWGEE models should be more widely considered in the analysis of IVF data with multiple cycles per woman. The CWGEE approach is computationally simple, addresses non-ignorable (informative) cluster size, and is robust against mis-specification of the underlying covariance structure. Among the methods compared in this analysis, CWGEE models generally yielded the narrowest CIs, possibly indicating the most precise estimates. We also stre
High responders are not exempt from detrimental effects of prematurely rising progesterone levels in fresh embryo transfer cycles
The progressive rise of serum progesterone from the <0.5 to the >4 ng/ml interval caused a gradual and continuous decline in the CPR of all three types of ovarian response. The absolute difference in the CPR between the lowest and the highest progesterone groups was not related to the magnitude of ovarian response (26.6%, 37.7% and 40.7% for the low, normal and high responders, respectively). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, the d
Non-invasive embryo evaluation and selection using time-lapse monitoring: Results of a randomized controlled study
The study was closed after three years. Eventually 161 patients were randomized and analyzed (N=80 TL-eSET and N=81 control-eSET). Pregnancy rate did not significantly differ between the groups though there was a trend favoring TL selection (TL-eSET: 46.3% vs control-eSET: 34.6%, p :=0.150: OR: 1.628 (95% CI: 0.8573.092)). The time-lapse score based on morphologic and kinetic kinetic parameters was significantly higher for blastocysts that
Effects of opening the incubator on morphokinetics in mouse embryos
Conclusions: Even disruptions in culture conditions as simple as incubator door openings lead to measurable, significant changes in morphokinetics that would have been missed with standard parameters such as blastocyst rate. This underlines the relevance of undisturbed and stable culture conditions and emphasizes the need for further research in this field.
What is the effect of embryo morphology on serum bhCG levels?
Conclusion: Our study suggests that serum bhCG levels resulting from a single fresh blastocyst ET showed a correlation with day 5 blastocoele expansion and blastocyst quality score in both ongoing pregnancy and live birth.
Violent thug wins the right to fertility treatment while in jail: Convict could become father behind bars after winning human rights battle despite
A violent criminal was granted fertility treatment inside prison while many childless couples are denied IVF because of cutbacks. The inmate, who was convicted of a serious assault, had his request approved last year by then prisons minister Sam Gyimah. It is thought the treatment, which can cost up to £2,000, was paid for by the NHS.Healthcare rationing watchdogs say women under the age of 40 can have three free cycles of IVF if they have been
