The datafication of reproduction: time‐::lapse embryo imaging and the commercialisation of IVF
By analysing the new ways of seeing embryos with ‘in silico vision,’ the ‘data generativity’ of developing embryos and the patenting of embryo selection algorithms, I argue that this datafied method of embryo selection may not just result in more or less ‘IVF success,’ but also affects the conceptualisation and commercialisation of the assisted reproductive process.
Secondary sex ratio in assisted reproduction: an analysis of 1 ::376 ::454 treatment cycles performed in the UK
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: This is the largest study to date evaluating the impact of ART on SSR. The results demonstrate that, overall, ART does have an impact on the SSR when assessed according to the method of fertilization (ICSI increased female births while IVF increased males). However, given the ratio of IVF to ICSI cycles at present with 60% of cycles from IVF and 40% from ICSI, the overall SSR for ART closely reflects the popula
Obstetric Complications of Donor Egg Conception Pregnancies
Ovum donation has now been shown to be an independent risk factor for hypertensive disease in pregnancy, post-partum haemorrhage and increased risk of caesarean section. Neonatal outcomes are less clear-cut, although there is some evidence to suggest there is increased risk of small for gestational age babies and preterm delivery. It is now clear that OD pregnancies are higher risk than IVF pregnancies with autologous ovum and they should be tre
Association of paternal age with perinatal outcomes between 2007 and 2016 in the United States: population based cohort study
Advanced paternal age is associated with negative effects on both mothers and offspring. Given the relatively low prevalence of advanced paternal age in the US, population level impacts are currently modest. Nevertheless, as advanced paternal age has doubled in the US over the past generation, further investigation is warranted of the impact on birth outcomes and public health.
Growth Hormone and Endometrial Receptivity - a mini review.
Studies are indicating that co-treatment with GH could improve the endometrial thickness, and possibly receptivity among infertile women. This effect might occur through increasing endometrial blood perfusion and the expression of genes and proteins related to endometrial receptivity such as VEGF and ITGB3 together with IGF-1, however the exact mechanisms in the endometrium remain to be clarified.
Associations between embryo grading and congenital malformations in IVF/ICSI pregnancies
Conclusions: This is the first study to compare the rates of individual congenital malformations for good and poor quality embryos. It provides insight into potential risks of transferring poor quality embryos. In pregnancies >20 weeks’ gestation, poor quality Day 5 embryos are associated with major malformations, at least one anomaly, musculoskeletal anomalies, talipes and the ICD classification ‘Other congenital malformations’. In pregnan
Influence of in vitro capacitation time on structural and functional human sperm parameters
We found that a 4 h swim-up capacitation increased sperm quality, because a large number of cells with normal morphology and lower DNA fragmentation rates were recovered. Furthermore, the long-term capacitation induced a higher percentage of cells with tyrosine phosphorylation of the principal piece as well as a redistribution of lectin-binding sites. Overall, the multivariate biomarkers analyzed showed a less variable distribution on spermatozo
Low LH Level on the Day of GnRH Agonist Trigger Is Associated With Reduced Ongoing Pregnancy and Live Birth Rates and Increased Early Miscarriage Rate
Conclusion: Low serum LH levels on the day of GnRH-a trigger is associated with reduced ongoing pregnancy and live birth rates and increased early miscarriage rates. Our findings suggest a lower threshold of serum LH values on the day of GnRH-a trigger necessary to optimize reproductive outcomes in fresh embryo transfer cycles.
The belief that a pregnant woman is responsible for the well-being of her fetus is easy to understand. A fetus is (literally) connected to its mother. Myriad factors such as a mother's physical and mental condition, exposure to toxins and whether she is well-nourished have long been recognized as determinants of newborn fitness. Yet the paternal role in producing a healthy baby is rarely considered.
