The baby, a healthy boy weighing 7.15lbs, was born in April. His mother took part in a trial run by Hammersmith hospital and Imperial College in London designed to ensure that the hormone, kisspeptin, was capable of stimulating the ovaries and maturing the eggs just as well as the normal treatment.
First baby born using new lower risk IVF treatment
The treatment reduces the risk of women developing a potentially life threatening condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which can be triggered by the high levels of hormones used to induce egg development in patients. The researchers found, however, that if they gave women a different hormone that occurs naturally in the body, they could reduce the amount of time their hormones are artificially elevated for.
The risk of preterm delivery increases with maternal overweight and obesity, according to a new Swedish study published in Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
