High variability in results of semen analysis in andrology laboratories in Tuscany (Italy): the experience of an external quality control (EQC) progra
Of interest, mean bias values for concentration dropped significantly at the third trial for low activity laboratories. In conclusion, lack of agreement of results of semen analysis in Tuscany is mainly because of the activity and the experience of the laboratory. Our study points out the importance of participating in EQC programmes and periodical teaching courses as well as the use of WHO recommended standardized procedures to increase precisio
Sperm counts may have declined in young university students in Southern Spain
Sperm concentration and total sperm count declined significantly with year of birth in the pooled analysis (β: = −:0.04 and β: = −:0.06, respectively, both p < 0.01) - -Other semen variables did not differ significantly between the two studies. Our study suggests that total sperm count and sperm concentration may have declined in young Spanish men over the last decade.
No increased sperm DNA fragmentation index in semen containing human papillomavirus or herpesvirus
Sperm DNA integrity was determined by the sperm chromatin structure assay. HPVs or HHVs, or both, were found in 57% of semen samples: however, sperm DNA fragmentation index was not increased in semen containing these viruses.
Human preimplantation embryo development in vitro: a morphological assessment of sibling zygotes cultured in a single medium or in sequential media
A difference was noted in the blastomere symmetry of Day 2 embryos in the two media, but was no longer apparent on examination of Day 3 embryos. No differences were noted in the rates of blastocyst development, inner cell mass (ICM), and trophectoderm (TE) scores in the two culture media. Finally, no significant differences were noted with either the proportion of blastocysts chosen for transfer or cryopreservation (vitrification). The findings s
An analysis of the impact of embryo transfer difficulty on live birth rates, using a standardised grading system.
Conclusion: This study, which we believe to be the largest report using a standardised system for grading the difficulty of ET, demonstrates that difficult ETs are associated with lower live birth rates but not higher rates of ectopic or miscarriage. While the presence of blood may be an indicative of a relatively more traumatic and difficult transfer, it does not necessarily lead to a lower birth rate.
Simultaneous administration of human acidic and recombinant less acidic follicle-stimulating hormone for ovarian stimulation improves oocyte and embry
CONCLUSIONS: The results show that the combination of human and recombinant FSH for ovarian stimulation may produce a positive effect on follicular development as it improve oocyte quality, embryo development, and ultimately clinical outcome.
Establishing a combined stimulation protocol hFSH followed by rFSH might represent a breakthrough in the IVF practice
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that establishing a stimulation protocol able to mimic the physiological differences in FSH isoforms, hFSH combined with rFSH positively impact on ART outcome.
Zeta potential vs apoptotic marker: which is more suitable for ICSI sperm selection?
Conclusion
Both MACS and Zeta procedures improve the quality of the selected spermatozoa for ICSI. However, MACS procedure is more efficient in individuals with severe male factor infertility to select sperm with normal acrosome and protamine content but concern regarding transfer of MACS beads into the oocyte remains to be resolved.
A survey of 1700 women who formed their families using donor spermatozoa
However, important areas of common ground were identified: the wish by those who had used an anonymous donor that they had used an open-identity donor: support for, and willingness to pay for, comprehensive genetic testing of donors: and desire for access to their donor‘s family health information. The implications of these results for policies concerning the use and management of donor spermatozoa will be discussed.
Anti-Müllerian hormone versus antral follicle count for defining the starting dose of FSH
There was a significant difference between the groups in the proportion of cycles with a hyperresponse (8.6% and 17.4%, but the incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome was similar (1.1% and 4.6%). There were no significant differences between two groups in outcomes, including implantation (19.3% versus 19.0%), clinical pregnancy (38.0% versus 46.9%), multiple pregnancy (16.5% versus 15.2%) and miscarriage (7.0% versus 8.3%).
Should embryos developing to blastocysts on day 7 be cryopreserved and transferred: an analysis of pregnancy and implantation rates
Conclusion(s): Blastocysts cryopreserved on day 7 have a lower, but clinically important potential. Embryos that do not achieve blastocyst stage on day 6 should not be universally discarded, but should be observed in culture 1 more day as 27% may result in an ongoing pregnancy.
A Perth fertility expert has attacked what she describes as a conveyor-belt approach to in-vitro fertilisation, claiming some clinics were not properly investigating men for infertility and instead opting for a quick fix. Dr Anne Jequier, a consultant for two IVF clinics, said there was a worrying trend to push couples to IVF without doing the basic science, including checking men thoroughly for medical issues.
'Test-tube baby' Brown hails pioneers on 35th birthday
The world's first "test-tube baby", Louise Brown, has paid tribute to the fertility doctors who gave her life, as she celebrates her 35th birthday.
She said in vitro fertilisation had helped millions - there are thought to be more than 5.5 million IVF babies worldwide.
Sex Chromosome Shocker: The 'Female' X a Key Contributor to Sperm Production
Painstaking new analysis of the genetic sequence of the X chromosome - long perceived as the "female" counterpart to the male-associated Y chromosome - reveals that large portions of the X have evolved to play a specialized role in sperm production.
