Age thresholds for changes in semen parameters in men
Our findings project a declining likelihood of pregnancy following intercourse with men >34 years old, independent from the woman’s age and increasing with advancing age. Age-related mechanisms associated with this oligoasthenoteratozoospermic progression are discussed.
Efficacy and safety of IVF/ICSI in patients with severe endometriosis after long-term pituitary down-regulation
Long-term pituitary down-regulation with a GnRH agonist for 3–6 months prior to IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) improves pregnancy rates in endometriosis patients. -This study showed that IVF/ICSI in patients with severe endometriosis is a safe procedure with low complication and recurrence rates. Long-term pituitary down-regulation with a GnRH agonist is more beneficial in achieving an ongoing pregnancy after including frozen embr
Patenting time-lapse microscopy: the European story
The European Patent, which is directed to a method of selecting embryos for implantation using the results of time-lapse microscopy, should, in the present authors’ opinion, be revoked as being directed to a method of medical diagnosis, which is unpatentable under European patent law. The only party currently opposing Stanford’s patent is a competitor, Unisense FertiliTech A/S which is itself seeking to patent similar methods in Europe: the objec
Assisted reproductive technology in Australia and New Zealand 2011
There were 66,347 assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment cycles performed in Australia and New Zealand in 2011 (61,158 and 5,189 respectively), representing an increase of 8.3% for Australia and a decrease of 1.8% for New Zealand on 2010. Women used their own oocytes or embryos (autologous) in 95.1% of treatments, and 33.7% of all cycles used

Obstetric and perinatal outcomes in singleton pregnancies resulting from the transfer of blastocyst-stage versus cleavage-stage embryos generated thro
Data from observational studies show that ET at the blastocyst stage is associated with a higher risk of very preterm delivery. However, we were not able to adjust for confounders. Perinatal outcome data from existing randomized trials are needed to determine the safety of ET at the blastocyst stage compared with the cleavage stage.
Are new technologies in infertility treatment always good news?
When vulnerable couples trying in vitro fertilisation (IVF) learn of news reports about promising new techniques they may well demand them from their general practitioner or infertility clinics. They may be prepared to pay hundreds of pounds in the hope of improving their chances of a pregnancy. GPs and specialists too may be influenced by such coverage.
A simple technique called endometrial scratching improves the clinical pregnancy rate in women undergoing assisted reproductive treatment, new research shows.
Endometrial scratching performed in the non-transfer cycle and outcome of assisted reproduction: a randomized controlled trial
Endometrial scratching performed once, during OCP pretreatment 7–14 days before starting COS, increases the chance of live birth and clinical pregnancy, but might cause considerable pain
Roy Morgan poll shows most Aussies oppose sex selection for babies
AUSTRALIAN parents who want to choose the gender of their children have been locked into expensive overseas treatments after a push by local fertility specialists to green-light the controversial technique has stalled. The first comprehensive poll of the nation's attitudes towards gender selection shows only one in five people support the technique.
BGI Health to introduce NIFTY screening test to reduce miscarriages
BGI Health is marking Baby Loss Awareness Week (9-15 October) with the launch of a new non-invasive screening test for Down’s Syndrome and other conditions, which can reduce the risk of miscarriage significantly compared with other, potentially unnecessary invasive procedures, according to recent studies.
Researchers Close in On Cause of Gynecological Disease
For the first time, researchers have created a model that could help unlock what causes adenomyosis, a common gynecological disease that is a major contributor to women having to undergo hysterectomies. In a two-step process, a team led by Michigan State University's Jae-Wook Jeong first identified a protein known as beta-catenin that may play a key role in the development of the disease. When activated, beta-catenin causes changes in certain cell
A couple who underwent IVF to have a baby is suing a prominent Queensland fertility clinic after the woman gave birth to triplets instead of twins. Fairfax reports the 35-year-old couple is seeking over half a million dollars in damages to cover the costs of raising their unexpected third child. The lawsuit is the second case of its kind in Australia, a similar claim was lodged by lesbian mothers of IVF twins in the ACT in 2005.The Queensland cou
Researchers Shed New Light On Egg Freezing Success Rates
Researchers from New York Medical College and the University of California Davis have for the first time codified age-specific probabilities of live birth after in vitro fertilization (IVF) with frozen eggs. They conducted a meta-analysis of oocyte cryopreservation cycles using individualized patient data to report the probability of live-birth from IVF cycles.
A Metabolic Means to Preserving Egg Supply, Fertility
The stresses that come with aging, chemotherapy treatments, and environmental exposures all threaten fertility. But what if there were a way to preserve women's limited egg supply? Researchers reporting on studies conducted in frog and mouse eggs in the Cell Press journal Molecular Cell on October 3rd may have found a way

The IVF Laboratory: Reflections on the Past. by Dr Peter Hollands, The Agora Gynaecology and Fertility Centre
It is now 35 years since the birth of the first IVF baby and since that time several million babies have been born worldwide. The science behind IVF has been constantly evolving during this period to the point that an embryologist working in a modern laboratory would not recognise some of the earlier technology which set the foundations of their profession.
