IVFD Selecting the ‘best’ embryos: prospects for improvement
This review considers why and how embryos are selected for transfer and with what consequences. It concludes that: (i) current selection methods are inadequate or at least inadequately subjected to evidential scrutiny: (ii) decisions about number of embryos should be based not solely on input (numbers transferred) but on out turn (likelihood of the transfer resulting in multiple pregnancies): and (iii) what is needed are better methods not just f

IVFD A new approach to evaluate aging effects on human oocytes: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging spectroscopy study
For the first time, FTIR spectroscopy was applied to human oocytes, leading to strong evidence of damage from aging in the gametes of mature women, which could be related to a decline in reproductive function. All the information obtained may be considered useful to improve the scientific knowledge on human reproduction and to exploit new strategies for detecting oocyte aging.

IVFD Luteal-phase ovarian stimulation is feasible for producing competent oocytes in women undergoing in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injecti
Of the 242 women enrolled in the study, all participants succeeded in producing oocytes and 227 women had highest-quality embryos to cryopreserve. The average number of oocytes retrieved was 13.1, producing an average of 4.8 highest quality embryos. Moreover, no cases experienced a premature LH surge or moderate/severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome during the stimulation cycles. In FETs, the clinical pregnancy rate, ongoing pregnancy rate, an

IVFD Cleavage-stage biopsy significantly impairs human embryonic implantation potential while blastocyst biopsy does not: a randomized and paired clinical
Blastomere biopsy on day 3 of development resulted in a significant reduction in sustained implantation. Only 30% of biopsied embryos had sustained implantation and ultimately developed into live-born infants versus 50% of unbiopsied controls, a relative reduction of 39%. In contrast, sustained implantation rates were equivalent (51% vs. 54%) for biopsied and control blastocysts.

IVFD In vitro fertilization with single euploid blastocyst transfer: a randomized controlled trial
The ongoing pregnancy rate per randomized patient after the first ET was similar between groups (60.7% after single euploid blastocyst transfer vs. 65.1% after untested two-blastocyst transfer: relative risk [RR], 0.9: 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.7–1.2). A difference of greater than 20% in favor of two-blastocyst transfer was excluded. The risk of multiple gestation was reduced after single euploid blastocyst transfer (53.4% to 0%), and patie

IVFD Obstetrical and neonatal outcomes from the BEST Trial: Single embryo transfer with aneuploidy screening improves outcomes after in vitro fertilization
By enhancing embryo selection with a validated method of aneuploidy screening, a single euploid embryo with high reproductive potential can be selected for transfer. Using this approach, eSET can be performed without compromising delivery rates and improving the chance of having a healthy, term singleton delivery after IVF.

IVFD Pregnancy Prediction in Single Embryo Transfer Cycles after ICSI Using QPCR: Validation in Oocytes from the Same Cohort
In conclusion, prediction models built on selected quantified transcripts in CC might help in the decision making process which is currently only based on subjective embryo morphology scoring. The validity of our current models for routine application still need prospective assessment in a larger and more diverse patient population allowing intra-patient analysis.

IVFD Sperm attachment and penetration competence in the human oocyte: a possible aetiology of fertilization failure involving the organization of oolemmal
The results show that certain microdomain configurations are consistent with fertilization, others permissive for attachment but not penetration, and still others inconsistent with attachment. When carefully examined microscopically, a sperm head was present on the oolemma in ∼:35% of normal-appearing but unfertilized oocytes. This suggests a type of fertilization defect that may be both common and, possibly, a cause of ‘unexplained’ inferti

The basal AMH, AFC and maximum serum level of 17β:-estradiol before pickup continue to show higher correlation to pregnancy rate. The maximum endometrial thickness at pickup resulted important to predict the pregnancy rate and the chances to detect ongoing pregnancy. It seems mandatory to well define the ovarian biological age rather than the chronological one in women older than 40 years of age in order to give the best counseling and to cho

IVFD IVF sex selection allowed in Western Australia to reduce autism risk
Sex selection in IVF as a method of avoiding autism has been approved for the first time by health authorities in Western Australia. The state's Reproductive Technology Council has approved the application of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in a fertility clinic to select sex in order to minimise the risk of autism.

IVFD Genetic screening allowed for family with autism
The Reproductive Technology Council has approved an application for a family pre-disposed to autism, to have sperm screened in the hopes of having a child without the disorder. Autism is more common in boys. The testing would allow clinicians to use sperm with the "X" chromosome to ensure a girl would be born

IVFD More get IVF help after egg donation fee rises
SCOTLAND'S largest private fertility clinic has seen a three-fold rise in women donating eggs since the payment for donations tripled. The rise in the number of IVF treatments at the Glasgow Centre for Reproductive Medicine (GCRM) has risen sharply since fees increased for donors in April last year and more older women seek to have children.

IVFD Rise in IVF popularity leaves thousands of babies in limbo
More women are using donated eggs for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and more healthy babies are being born through the process, according to a study released last week. While this is good news, the process also creates more embryos than can be implanted, leaving hundreds of thousands of frozen embryos in fertility clinics.

The survey of 500 women who wanted children – including those undergoing treatment or still looking for the right partner – revealed friends and family are the ones who put the most pressure on, with 40 per cent saying they were too embarrassed to talk about fertility, even to those closest to them.

IVFD Multiple births drop with IVF improvements
Fewer twins and triplets are being born in Australia despite the rising number of total births, prompting links with advancements in assisted fertility. The number of multiple births fell to 4480 nationally in 2012, down by just under two per cent from the year prior, and three per cent from 2010, when 4611 multiple births were recorded. The decline, shown in Australian Bureau of Statistics data released last week, comes despite the total number
