IVFD A randomized triple blind controlled trial comparing the live birth rate of IVF following brief incubation versus standard incubation of gametes
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: The present study demonstrated that a brief incubation of gametes had no significant beneficial effect on the LBR when compared with the standard incubation. The practice of brief incubation of gametes is not necessary and this can save the already tight manpower in many laboratories.

IVFD Associations of sperm mitochondrial DNA copy number and deletion rate with fertilization and embryo development in a clinical setting
To our knowledge, our study is the first to assess the associations of sperm mtDNAcn and mtDNAdel with fertilization and embryo quality. The biological mechanism(s) underlying these associations are unknown. Multivariable models suggest that sperm mtDNAcn and mtDNAdel provide discrimination independent of age and semen parameters: therefore, future investigation of the utility of sperm mtDNA as a biomarker for ART outcomes is warranted.

IVFD Is frozen embryo transfer better for mothers and babies? Can cumulative meta-analysis provide a definitive answer?
Meanwhile, caution should be exercised about embarking on a policy of electively freezing all embryos in IVF as there are increased risks for large for gestational age babies and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Therefore, elective freezing should ideally be undertaken in specific cases such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, fertility preservation or in the context of randomised trials.

IVFD Addressing knowledge gaps in long term outcomes following embryo freezing
Compared with fresh embryo cycles, cryopreservation is also associated with improved pregnancy rates and reductions in preterm birth, small for gestational age and low birth weight (Maheshwari et al Hum Reprod Update 2018:24(1):35‐:58). However, emerging adverse health impacts include increased risks of hypertensive disease in pregnancy and macrosomia

IVFD An oviduct-on-a-chip provides an enhanced in vitro environment for zygote genome reprogramming
We designed an oviduct-on-a-chip platform to better investigate the mechanisms related to (epi)genetic reprogramming and the degree to which they differ between in vitro and in vivo embryos. The device supports more physiological (in vivo-like) zygote genetic reprogramming than conventional IVF. This approach will be instrumental in identifying and investigating factors critical to fertilization and pre-implantation development, which could impro

IVFD Mitochondrial functionality modifies human sperm acrosin activity, acrosome reaction capability and chromatin integrity
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Mitochondrial functionality might be necessary to maintain sperm acrosin activity, AR and chromatin integrity. Tests of mitochondrial functionality should be developed and used independently of or in addition to conventional semen parameters in infertility diagnosis or risk-assessment processes.

IVFD Association between paternal smoking at the time of pregnancy and the semen quality in sons
Conclusions: Our results suggest a negative association between paternal smoking and sperm counts in the sons, independent of the level maternal nicotine exposure during the pregnancy.

IVFD Sperm count 50 percent lower in sons of fathers who smoke
Studies have repeatedly linked maternal smoking during pregnancy with reduced sperm counts in male offspring. Now a research team has discovered that, independently of nicotine exposure from the mother, men whose fathers smoked at the time of pregnancy had half as many sperm as those with non-smoking fathers

Title
Is the sperm count lower in young men if their father smokes?
Summary
In short, if the father of a young man smokes during the conception period, their sperm count will be about 50% lower.
Comment
In this small study from Sweden looking at the semen profile of 104 young healthy men who completed a questionnaire on their fathers smoking habits were found to have a significantly lower sperm concentration and total sperm count. Morphology and motility were also lower in the raw data be not so after other co founders (like BMI) were included in the analysis.|The study had information on the mothers smoking habits (drawn from rubella screening during pregnancy). Unfortunately, the questionnaire asked only if their father smoked during the conception time and not on their intensity of smoking. There was only one semen sample provided.|Nevertheless, the strong statistical association suggest some relationship between their fathers smoking around the time of conception and their subsequent semen profile. Even when other factors including their mothers smoking habits and occupation and the men's BMI and own smoking habit, were excluded, the association remained. While motility and morphology did not appear to be linked, the effect was directed towards spermatogenesis. Further studies will need to focus on how spermatogenesis was effected.|While it is unlikely men will stop smoking, clinics could at least recommend that the men revert to the use of nicotine patches or other devices during the time of attempting IVF or other fertility treatments. One would think, and even hope, that both partners would not wish their children to be less fertile.|While the authors noted this relationship, they also noted that the study did not prove causality. Nevertheless, all clinics should be aware that any action, or lack of action, during an IVF treatment that may, in the future, be found to be negative, may have legal consequences and their consent forms should reflect this.|
