The Andrology laboratory should be a dedicated area of work space. If the area is used for both diagnostic and clinical procedures, increased isolation from any other routine pathology based services is recommended. All samples should be considered infectious and standard laboratory safety procedures are required. These include the use of disposable gloves, suitable laboratory covering and shoes, no mouth pipetting of any kind, no food and drinks and a clean work area for writing. There should be containers for sharp items such as needle tips and glass pipettes and a contaminated waste bag or container for all sample and contaminated waste products. There should be recovery material available including eye wash and spill bleach solutions [10% household bleach solution]. The bench may be covered with a plastic backed towel material and all benched should be impervious to solutions [laminated material]. Hands should be washed with antiseptic cleaner repeated during the working day and at the end of any laboratory session.
